Biographical Sketch
A specialist in Latin American History, Dr. Robert Freeman Smith is a native of Little Rock, Arkansas, born on May 13th, 1930. He received both his bachelor and masters of Arts from the University of Arkansas in 1952 and 1953. In 1958 he received his doctorate of philosophy from the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Smith also served in the United States Navy and later as an Army Officer during the Korean War.
Prior to coming to the University of Toledo in 1969, Dr. Smith was in the faculty at the Universities of Connecticut, Wisconsin, Rhode Island, Arkansas, and Texas Lutheran College. While at the University of Toledo, Dr. Smith served on a number of committees, received a research grant in 1974 and in 1976 was given the Thomas L. Evans Research Award by the Harry S. Truman Library in Independence, Missouri. In 1986, Dr. Smith was the recipient of one of the first two “Distinguished University Professor” recognition awards given by President James D. McComas.
Dr. Smith has published scores of articles, papers, and books on Latin American History, U.S. foreign relations, and on the history of the southern United States. His six books include The United States and Cuba: Business and Diplomacy, 1917-1960 (1960); What Happened to Cuba? A Documentary History of U.S.-Cuban Relations (1963); Background to Revolution: The Development of Modern Cuba (1965); The United States and Revolutionary Nationalism in Mexico (1972) which won the 1973 book award from the Ohio Academy of History. Also he published a two volume series, The Era of Caribbean Intervention 1890-1930 (1981) and The United States and the Latin American Sphere of Influence: The Era for Good Neighbors, Cold Warriors, and Hairshirts, 1930-1982 (1983).
Dr. Smith is a member of many academic organizations, some of which include the American historical Association, the Association of American Historians, the Academy of Political Science, the Conference on Peace Research in History, and the Association of Historians of American Foreign Relations, for which he served on the executive board of their journal, Diplomatic History. In 1970, Dr. Smith was appointed to the Task Force on U.S.- Cuban Relations by the chairman of the council, Dr. Max A. Lauffer, Andrew Mellon professor of biophysics at the University of Pittsburgh.
Outside academic circles, Dr. Smith was on the vestry of the St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, a member of the American Legion Post 335, a Shriner, and a 32nd Degree Freemason. Dr. Robert Freeman Smith died on November 24th, 2011.
Scope and Content Note
The Robert Freeman Smith Papers are arranged in three series and span the years 1864-1990s. The first series is titled “Correspondence” and includes personal and professional materials. The second series consists of research notes and encompasses a portion of the materials used for published works. The third series includes academic and professional material ranging from manuscripts and UT History Department to miscellaneous academic projects.

Primarily documents Dr. Smith’s writing efforts. Aside from original and copied articles and essays, extensive material on some books, such as notes, drafts, manuscripts and galley proofs are included in this series. There is also documentation as to Dr. Smith’s involvement with the U.S.-Cuban Relations Task Force and his academic projects from 1960 into the 1990’s. Various information for the universities or association that he has been involved with is also included. |
