Admission Requirements for New Students

Please note: Transfer students should refer to transfer admission requirements

The following admission requirements do not apply to Ohio residents who have been out of high school for more than one year or who have received a GED. These students will receive assessments upon admission to determine proficiency in English, composition and mathematics. Deficiencies must be improved in the first year of college study and may require participation in the ASE program.

Students who are residents of a state other than Ohio or Monroe County, Michigan and have been out of high school less than two years must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale and a 21 ACT composite score or a 980 SAT combined score for admission consideration. Non-Ohio residents with strong college preparatory curriculum who do not meet test score requirements will be reviewed on an individual basis. Some UT colleges and programs have specific admission criteria that must be met in order to be admitted.

Academic Core Requirements

The University of Toledo requires completion of specific college preparatory curriculum course work to be considered for unconditional admission. The minimum academic core requirements are:

  • 4 years/units of English
  • 3 years/units of natural science
  • 3 years/units of social science
  • 3 years/units of math (including Algebra I, II, Geometry or equivalent)

Students who do not meet the core curriculum requirements will be admitted conditionally. These students will be required to take placement exams and results of these exams may require that a student take developmental course work prior to taking specific college level course work.

ACT/SAT Test Scores

High school students must submit the following initial materials to be considered for unconditional admission:

  • Results from either the ACT or SAT, if the student is an Ohio resident out of high school less than one year or a non-Ohio resident out of high school less than two years. Although ACT or SAT scores may determine direct admission to certain academic programs, it will NOT determine admission into the University, except for non-Ohio residents. Beginning with the high school class of 2006, at least one writing section score is required for either the SAT or ACT for University research purposes.
  • Standardized test scores are required for academic scholarship award decisions; to determine placement into appropriate college level course work; and for admission into academic programs with selective admission requirements.

An Ohio resident who does not submit an ACT or SAT test result will be admitted conditionally. These students will be required to take placement exams and results of these exams may require that a student take developmental course work prior to taking specific college level course work.

High School/College Transcripts

Upon graduation, an official high school transcript, complete with a stamped graduation date, must be submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Admission to complete pre-enrollment procedures. This transcript is in addition to the partial transcript sent with the application. Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended including post-secondary work other than UT must be submitted.
