scholarship opportunities a higher level of learning and experience

Completing a college education is no small task, but to help you along the way the University of Toledo and the Department of Communication offer you scholarships, internships, financial aid, and work-study programs. Last year the department awarded over $70,000 in scholarships. If you're eligible, make sure you take the time to apply.

Changes in the Department of Communication application process now allow students to complete one central application through the College of Arts and Letters Donor Scholarships page.  The link to the application is right at the top of the page.  More specific information about the individual Department of Communication scholarships is noted below:

 

 THE minnie and shakee lacey memorial fund award

The Department of Communication faculty awards one or more stipends in varying amounts from the fund.  The award is open to students with a study emphasis in journalism including news editorial, broadcasting, public relations and photojournalism sequences.  The award is made on the basis of “need and worth”.  This award is limited to returning students.  Involvement in extra-curricular activities and community service enhance candidates’ applications.

THE christopher states SCHOLARSHIP

The Department of Communication faculty awards one or more stipends of varying amounts generated by an endowment fund.  The scholarship is open to full-time students who will be juniors or seniors in the academic award year who have a study emphasis in broadcasting or radio/television production and are in good academic standing. Students must demonstrate a clear interest or proficiency in the study of the history of broadcasting, or in the field of radio/television broadcasting.

 THE patterson department of communication award

The Department of Communication faculty awards one stipend in varying amounts.  The award is open to all Communication majors who demonstrate “pre-professional excellence and performance”.  Involvement in extra-curricular activities and community service enhance candidates’ applications.  Both fall and spring graduating seniors are eligible.

 THE doug sinn award

The Department of Communication faculty awards a stipend of varying amounts. Students must be a junior or senior for the academic award year with a study emphasis in broadcasting. Eligibility is based upon merit.

 THE cablesystem scholarship fund

Juniors and seniors for the academic award year who will enroll full-time next year are eligible if they also are active in campus or broadcasting activities, reside in the franchise area of Buckeye CableSystem, maintain a 2.75 or higher GPA, and have a financial need.  This award is limited to returning students.

The TerrI Marti Scholarship

Students returning as full-time students as either juniors or senior next academic year are eligible.  Students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Involvement in extra-curricular activities and community service enhance candidates’ applications.

The Ethel Wilcox Scholarship

Only Communication majors with at least a junior status for the academic award year who will return as full-time students next year are eligible.  Students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher and be active in campus or community activities. 

The Richard Cadwell Pheatt Scholarship

The recipients must major in communication, be US citizens and have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Preference will be given to applicants with a study emphasis in journalism. While the scholarship is not based on need it is considered.

John A. Bergener and Brandt A. England Scholarship

This award is for students holding at least a sophomore status for the academic award year and must be majoring in Communication or Marketing. Students must not live with a parent or guardian, have a 2.5 GPA and have a financial need.

The Press Club of Toledo Scholarship

The Press Club of Toledo awards this scholarship to Communication majors with a study emphasis in print media or broadcast media.  Applicants must have a GPA of 2.7 or higher and must be a graduate of an accredited high school in one of the following counties:  Lucas, Wood, Ottawa, Erie, Fulton, Williams, Defiance, Paulding, Putnam, Henry, Hancock, Seneca, and Sandusky in Ohio, and Monroe, Lenawee, and Hillsdale in Michigan.

 THE MARGARET PATTERSON SCHOLARSHIP

The Department of Communication faculty awards a stipend of varying amounts to one or more students.  Award preference is given to National Merit Scholars planning a career in journalism. 

 THE WILLIAM DAY SCHOLARSHIP

The Department of Communication faculty awards a stipend of varying amounts.  Recipients of the award must be returning students as juniors next academic year with a study emphasis in news media, be a full-time member of the Independent Collegian staff, and have a GPA of 2.8 or better. Involvement in extra-curricular activities and community service enhance candidates’ applications.
