Scholarships

Completing a college education is no small task, but to help you along the way the University of Toledo and the Department of Communication offer you scholarships, internships, financial aid, and work-study programs. Last year the department awarded over $70,000 in scholarships. If you're eligible, make sure you take the time to apply.

Changes in the Department of Communication application process now allow students to complete one central application through the College of Arts and Letters Donor Scholarships page.  The link to the application is right at the top of the page.  More specific information about the individual Department of Communication scholarships is noted below: 

The Minnie and Shakee Lacey memorial fund award

The Department of Communication Scholarship Committee awards one or more stipends in varying amounts.  The award is open to students with a study emphasis in journalism including news editorial, broadcasting, public relations and photojournalism sequences.  The award is made on the basis of “need and worth”. This award is limited to returning students. Involvement in extra-curricular activities and community service enhance candidates’ applications.

THE christopher states SCHOLARSHIP Award in Communication and Broadcasting

The Department of Communication Scholarship Committee awards one or more stipends of varying amounts.  The scholarship is open to full-time students who have a study emphasis in broadcasting or radio/television production,  are in good academic standing, must be Juniors or Seniors and demonstrate a clear interest or proficiency in the study of the history of broadcasting, or in the field of radio/television production.

THE WILLIAM DAY SCHOLARSHIP

The Department of Communication Scholarship Committee awards one stipend of varying amounts.  Recipients of the scholarship must be full-time, Junior status students with a study emphasis in news media. Students must be a full-time member of the Independent Collegian staff and have a GPA of 2.8 or better. The scholarship is not based on financial aid and is not renewable.

THE MARGARET PATTERSON SCHOLARSHIP

The Department of Communication Scholarship Committee awards a stipend of varying amounts to one or more students.  Scholarship preference is given to National Merit Scholars, planning a career in journalism.

THE DOUG SINN Memorial Scholarship

The Department of Communication Scholarship Committee awards a stipend of varying amounts. Students must majoring in Communication with a study emphasis in broadcasting. Eligibility is based upon merit. The scholarship is renewable but not automatic (students will need to reapply each year).

THE CABLESYSTEM SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Department of Communication Scholarship Committee, in cooperation with representatives of The CableSystem, awards one stipend of varying amounts. Recipients home address must be in the franchise service are of The CableSystem. Students shall be full-time Juniors and Seniors, majoring in Communication with a concentration in broadcasting, shall have and maintain a minimum 2.75 GPA or higher, and be active in campus and/or community broadcasting activities. Students must have a financial need and the scholarship is not renewable.

THE ETHEL WILCOX SCHOLARSHIP

The Department of Communication Scholarship Committee awards one stipend of varying amounts. Students must be full-time, Junior status and major in Communication.  Students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher and be active in campus or community activities. The scholarship is not renewable.

THE TERRY L. MARTI Memorial SCHOLARSHIP

The Department of Communication Scholarship Committee awards one stipend of varying amounts. Students must be Junior or Senior level students majoring in Communication. Students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher and be involved in extra-curricular activities and community service.

THE RICHARD CADWELL PHEATT Endowed SCHOLARSHIP fund

The Department of Communication Scholarship Committee awards one or more stipends of varying amounts. First preference shall be given to students majoring in Communication, particularly with a study emphasis in journalism. Students must be a citizen of the United States and have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher. The scholarship is not based on financial need, but financial need is considered. The scholarship is renewable to students continuously improving academically (students will need to reapply each year).

JOHN A. BERGENER AND BRANDT A. ENGLAND SCHOLARSHIP Fund - CA

The Department of Communication Scholarship Committee awards one or more stipends of varying amounts. Students must be at least a Sophomore status, not residing in the home of his/her parent or guardian, majoring in Communication, have a 2.5 GPA or higher and have a financial need. The scholarship is renewable provided the student continues to meet criteria (students will need to reapply each year).

THE PRESS CLUB OF TOLEDO SCHOLARSHIP

The Press Club of Toledo Board of Directors, with The Department of Communication Scholarship Committee awards one stipend of varying amounts. Students shall be Communication majors with a study emphasis in print media or broadcast media, have a 2.7 GPA  or higher and must be a graduate of an accredited high school in one of the following counties:  Lucas, Wood, Ottawa, Erie, Fulton, Williams, Defiance, Paulding, Putnam, Henry, Hancock, Seneca, and Sandusky in Ohio; and Monroe, Lenawee, and Hillsdale in Michigan. Scholarship is not based on need and is not automatically renewable, but students may reapply.

Don Reiber Student Production Fund

The Department of Communication Scholarship Committee (consisting of Broadcasting/Media faculty and Media staff) awards stipends of varying amounts. The stipends are to be awarded at the end of each academic year and the Department of Communication will track and annually determine the minimum number of games worked per sport in order to qualify for the stipend. Students must be full-time, Sophomore status, with a 2.0 GPA or higher, who demonstrate a clear interest or proficiency in the field of television broadcasting. Involvement in working with the media services will enhance the students' applications. 

THE department of communication OUTSTANDING STUDENT award

The Department of Communication Scholarship Committee awards one stipend in varying amounts.  The award is open to all Communication majors who demonstrate “pre-professional excellence and performance”.  Involvement in extra-curricular activities and community service enhance candidates’ applications.  Both fall and spring graduating seniors are eligible.
