Carol Nelson-Burns: “Completing a Liberal Arts education at Mount Union College during the 1960’s social
consciousness was a defining experience. The commitment of humanitarian professors,
a compassionate college president, and the intellectual spirituality of the campus
chaplain formed a clear understanding of the purposes which higher education served.
My mentors taught me to look more carefully, to think more deeply, and to act on my
convictions. They started me on a journey that led me farther than I could ever have
imagined possible at that time. An educator for nearly thirty years at high schools,
colleges, and universities in Ohio, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Australia, I have had
the privilege to live and work in other cultures, to hear and respect different perspectives
of the world, and to pursue different interests as the field of English and the focus
of education have changed. It is my hope that I may instill some of these same energies
and visions in the students I teach.”
