Writing Courses- course descriptions

ENGL 6010: English Instruction in Composition

This course begins with an inquiry into the theoretical underpinnings of the teaching of writing, extending those theories to consider our own classroom practices. We then turn to a consideration of key pedagogical strategies, working collaboratively to examine and model best teaching practices. Finally, we deal with issues related to the assessment of writing, including reading and responding to students texts, grading student writing, and methods for increasing student participation in the assessment process, such as peer review. Students in the class will participate in the production of a statement of teaching philosophy, a revised syllabus, and course assignment sheets; students may also be asked to participate in a group research project or write a paper which argues for how the syllabus enacts the teaching philosophy.
