UT Community Steel Drum Band

The steel pan, also known as the steel drum, has steadily been gaining popularity throughout the world since its invention in the 1940’s. The relative ease of the instrument to learn has made it popular as a way of engaging the community and teaching music to all ages. Dr. Aaron Ziegler, and the University of Toledo Department of Music, is beginning enrollment in the first steel band open to all high school and college aged students in the city of Toledo. In these classes students will learn the instruments of the steel pan family, groove playing in the engine room (percussion section), the history and development of the instrument, and will perform concerts for their friends and family periodically throughout the year. The University of Toledo Community Steelband will meet each Sunday evening from 5:30-7pm at a cost of $180 per 3 month session, and is open to any high school or college age student regardless of past musical experience. If you or your child is interested in joining this ensemble and would like more information please email Aaron Ziegler at: Aaron.Ziegler@utoledo.edu or call 419-344-8488.
