MASTER OF MUSIC IN PERFORMANCE | MASTER OF MUSIC EDUCATION | LAMP (Licensure Alternative Master's Program)

The University of Toledo offers master's level degrees in music performance and music education. Acceptance into graduate music degree programs requires acceptance by the UT Graduate School, an extensive audition, diagnostic music theory and music history examinations, an undergraduate GPS of at least 2.70, and three letters of recommendation. Below is basic information about each degree. To your right are links with graduation checksheets for each degree, information on graduate assistantships and other helpful degree related links. MASTER OF MUSIC IN PERFORMANCE

For the master of music in performance degree, students must take a minimum of 30 hours of formal course work. Of the 30 hours, a minimum of 10 hours is required in applied study, leading to a graduate recital. In addition, students will be advised to select a balance of courses (minimum of 10 hours) among music theory, music history and literature, and pedagogy. The remaining 10 hours include the required Graduate Studies in Music course - MUS 5900 (three hours), ensembles (two hours), a document (two hours) and electives (three hours).

Applicants are required to audition for the applied faculty. A diagnostic music theory and history exam will be administered before the first semester of enrollment. Applicants should have the minimum undergraduate GPA (2.70) required by the Graduate School for admission to the program. Applicants who do not have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.70 are required to take the GRE and report the results to the Graduate School and the department.

Student Learning Outcomes in the Master of Music in Performance

1. Students will demonstrate their ability to perform with a high degree of musicianship, technical security, and artistry.

2. Students will demonstrate a wide range of repertoire appropriate for their instrument or voice.

3. Students will demonstrate their ability to perform in both solo and ensemble settings and be familiar with successful rehearsal techniques appropriate to each setting.

4. Students will be able to articulate appropriate pedagogical strategies and techniques to enable them to function as studio teachers.

5. Students will be able to articulate knowledge of applicable performance and teaching literature.

MASTER OF MUSIC EDUCATION

Master of Music Education degrees are offered through the Judith Herb College of Education. Visit the college's degree catalog page for more information. The master of music education degree requires a minimum of 36 semester hours of coursework. Required courses include a research course (3 hours), a minimum of two ensembles (2 hours), a project or thesis (3 hours) and the college's (Judith Herb College of Education, Health Science and Human Service) core of 12 semester hours. Other course selections are in music education and areas that require further study, based on entrance exam results.

Student Learning Outcomes in the Master of Music Education

Students will:

1. Develop an understanding of theories of learning and musical learning, their roots, assumptions, and implications for music education practice.

2. Improve and expand upon their knowledge of teaching methods and materials, including the influences of technology and multiculturalism in the learning process.

3. Develop an understanding of current trends and methodologies in education and music education.

4. Demonstrate the advanced musical and pedagogical knowledge and research/writing skills necessary to enhance their teaching abilities in a P-16 Vocal and/or Instrumental teaching position.

5. Demonstrate the advanced musical and pedagogical knowledge and research/writing and communication skills necessary to solve a contemporary music education problem.

LAMP Licensure Alternative Master’s Program

The Licensure Alternative Master's Program (LAMP) is a unique program for providing an initial license for those individuals who are seeking a career change and are interested in becoming teachers. The LAMP provides a sequence of courses applicable to teacher licensure from the State of Ohio and may be combined with an appropriate master’s degree. Licensure may be obtained in the following areas: Adolescent education (grades 7-12), middle childhood education (grades 4-9), art education (grades K-12) and music education (grades K-12). The program is designed to provide the student with opportunities to spend time in school settings and to put these experiences into perspective through on-campus reflective seminars.
