The Department of Chemistry typically awards each entering graduate student an assistantship that includes a base stipend with complete waiver of tuition. For 2009-2010, the twelve-month base stipends will be $22,000 for Ph.D. students and $18,000 for M.S. students. Including the tuition waiver, the entire package is valued at approximately $45,000 for out-of-state students and $33,000 for in-state Ph.D. students. For highly qualified students, additional merit fellowships from $1,000 to $3,000 are available to supplement the base stipends. Thus, stipends of $25,000 are possible depending on the applicant's academic record. In order to receive strong consideration for a merit fellowship, an early application is recommended.
