Disability History Archive

Participating in the Project

The Ward M. Canaday Center actively seeks to collect historical materials to add to the Regional Disability History Archive.  Once donated to the Center, the records are organized by professional archivists, detailed guides tot eh collections are created, and the records are preserved in an environmentally-controlled storage area.  The records are made available to researchers in the reading room of the Center.  The records never leave the library.

Specifically, the Center is interested in acquiring the following types of records from disability-related organizations: minutes of boards of directors, committee minutes, publications such as newsletters, photographs, correspondence files of the executive director, annual reports, annual financial reports, marketing and public relations materials, scrapbooks, and personal records of people served by your organization.  We generally do not collect materials such as detailed financial records, case files that contain confidential information, lists of donors, and three-dimensional objects.

If donated to the Center, your organization’s materials are likely to be of interest to students and faculty in Disability Studies, Women and Gender Studies, History, and Education.  Because of the uniqueness of this project, the records are expected to attracted scholars and researchers from around the country.
