The University of Toledo

Summer Program

ESTO  (Español en Toledo)

June 29 - July 24, 2009

View of Toledo

There is no more ideal place for studying Spanish culture than Toledo.  The city is a living museum of Spain's past.  Subjects studied in books come alive as soon as one leaves the classroom and enters the dramatic streets of this very special city.

Toledo affords students the richness of Spain's past while being conveniently close to Madrid and its world-class cultural events and shopping.  With the addition of a new high-speed train line, a mere twenty minutes separates Toledo from Spain's capital. If you prefer cheaper and/or slower travel, frequent bus departures will take you to Madrid in an hour.

A four week Spanish course held at

La universidad de Castilla - La Mancha in Toledo, Spain

The program includes the following:

The Program

The Department of Foreign Languages is sponsoring a summer program at La Universidad de Castilla- La Mancha in our sister city of Toledo, Spain.

The program offers a four-week long intensive study of Spanish language and culture.  Included in the program are excursions to Madrid and the historic city of Segovia.

Eligibility

Students with a minimum GPA of 2.5 and at least one year of college-level Spanish, or the equivalent, are eligible to apply.  Students must demonstrate a desire to learn about the Spanish language and culture and have a flexible attitude toward living in a foreign culture.  In addition to undergraduates, teachers or others who would like to revive or advance their language abilities in Spanish may apply.  Students are required to attend a short pre-departure workshop,

Course Credit

Students selected to participate in the program will earn 3 credits for the course.  Language courses ranging from beginning to advanced are offered.  Credit may be applied to the various UT college language requirements and/or a Spanish major or minor program.  A placement test will be administered on site to determine the level of language study.

Program Cost

The complete cost of the program should be approximately $3,800.  The cost includes tuition, room and board, and round-trip airfare from Detroit to Madrid.  Food consists of three meals a day (except on weekends).  Students are required to pay for their own personal expenses.  Students can apply for a Study Abroad Travel Grant from the Office of Study Abroad, an Association of Two Toledos scholarship, and a Phi Kappa Phi study abroad grant to help defray the cost of the program.  Advanced students can be considered for a UT Undergraduate Research stipend.

The actual cost will be determined early in 2009 by the Universidad de Castilla - La Mancha and will depend in part on the relation of the dollar to the Euro.

Housing

Participants normally are housed in double rooms in the Residencia Santa Maria de la Cabeza of La Universidad de Castilla - La Mancha.  The residence is air conditioned.  Linen is provided.  There is a housekeeping staff charged with cleaning the rooms.  All dorm rooms have their own private bathroom, including shower. Meals are eaten in the residencia.  Students from other countries and American universities also live in the dorm.  For a higher cost, students may stay in single rooms or with a family.
