The Dr. Robert Brundage Western Lake Erie Waterkeeper Association Scholarship will be awarded to a graduate student conducting thesis/dissertation research at the University of Toledo Lake Erie Center.
The primary focus of the applicants' research should be on Lake Erie, preferably western Lake Erie. The amount of the scholarship is to be $500.00. A previous recipient may apply for a second award. No candidate may receive more than two awards.
Dr. Robert Brundage, or "Dr. Bob" as he was often called, was a native of Toledo, attended Scott High School, received a BS from The University of Toledo and a PhD from Brandeis University. Not only was he a research scientist but also an accomplished musician with his own recording company in Massachusetts. In 1997, he returned to Toledo and became active in many local organizations. He was an advocate for social justice, education and the environment. Among his many local activities he was on the Board of the Western Lake Erie Waterkeeper Association (WLEWA). He died in 2009 as a result of injuries sustained during a robbery.
Dr. Bob's thinking was global; his actions were local. His presence and efforts to make this a better world will be greatly missed. To continue his intention to foster solutions to the environmental issues in Western Lake Erie, the WLEWA has created a scholarship in his honor for graduate students at the University of Toledo Lake Erie Center.
The Western Lake Erie Waterkeeper Association (WLEWA) serves western Lake Erie from the headwaters of the Maumee River in Fort Wayne, Indiana, east to Huron, Ohio on the south and Point Pelee, Ontario, on the north. The mission of WLEWA is, “To preserve, protect, and improve the waters and fish of the Western basin of Lake Erie, the warmest, shallowest, most biologically productive area in all of the Great Lakes through collaboration, education, and advocacy.”
WLEWA is a non-profit 501c3 and is a member of the international Waterkeeper Alliance linking WLEWA with water experts around the world.
Procedure:
On or before the deadline each applicant is to file the following documents with Dr. Carol Stepien, Director of the UT Lake Erie Center. These documents are required for each applicant. You may download an application form, .doc file; .pdf file.
Applications are due Tuesday, December 1, 2009.
Applications will be reviewed by a neutral UT committee who will select three finalists. The Board of the WLEWA will then meet to decide on the scholarship recipient. The successful applicant will be notified by the WLEWA and the scholarship will be presented at the next meeting of the WLEWA.
