Graduate Student Opportunity

We are looking for a graduate student to work on a project examining ecosystem function in Maumee Bay including quantification of: larval fish populations entering Lake Erie from the Maumee River, the impact of a power plant on larval fish, and a number of related questions about the fish community.  We will use hydroacoustics and net sampling to determine the number and species composition of larval fish exiting the Maumee River.  We will also quantify uncertainty in our estimates using a variety of statistical techniques and determine how this uncertainty affects estimates of impact to the walleye population.  The Department of Environmental Sciences and the Lake Erie Center provide a dynamic environment where students interact with peers and faculty researchers. The student will also work closely with project collaborators from NOAA, USGS, and the Ohio DNR. We prefer a PhD student (with existing MS degree and publication experience) but students seeking an MS degree will be considered if they have appropriate experience and qualifications.  Preferred applicants will have experience in some of the following areas: fisheries sampling- especially hydroacoustics, boat use, limnological sampling methods, interest in Bayesian and other statistical techniques.  This position would begin in Jan of 2010.

Contact Dr. Christine Mayer at (419) 530-8377 or christine.mayer@utoledo.edu for more information about the position.
