2 UT Music Majors Earn Top Honors
(Spring 2009) Sam Mason, tenor, and Dusty Selman, baritone, students of professor Barbara Rondelli-Perry, were both 1st place winners in their respective categories at the Great Lakes Regional Auditions of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, held at Youngstown State University on March 7, 2009. Not only was Sam Mason a 1st place winner, but he was also awarded the Jon Vickers Award as the most promising student in 1st and 2nd year undergraduate studies. Jon Vickers was one of the great Canadian opera tenors.

Robert Ballinger, Lecturer, was brilliant as the coach/accompanist for all five participating UT students. The Richard  R. and Barbara R. Perry Program Excellence Fund funded the journey to Youngstown.

The Great Lakes Region provided contestants from Ontario Province in Canada, Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio, from colleges, universities, and individual professional voice teachers. There were seven contestants in Sam Mason’s category, and eight in Dusty Selman’s category, from outstanding music programs.

Sam Mason, tenor, is an undergraduate at the University of Toledo studying vocal music education. Dusty Selman, lyric baritone, is an undergraduate music education major.
