Department of Physics and Astronomy: Graduate Programs

Applying to the Graduate Program

A complete application consists of:

  • The application forms for admission (may be submitted on line) and (if desired) for assistantship
  • Scores on the general GRE tests
  • For students from non-English-speaking countries, a minimum of 213/550/80 on the TOEFL CBT/PBT/IBT, or the equivalent score on the IELTS (English language test not required if you would hold a US degree at entry)
  • An official transcript from each university previously attended; courses should usually encompass roughly the equivalent of a US bachelor's degree in physics
  • Letters of recommendation from three professors who know your potential for graduate study. The graduate school forms may be used, but please encourage your recommenders to write standard letters as well.

An important part of your application is the statement of purpose. It should describe how your research interests within physics and astronomy would fit with those of the department. It is permissible, but not necessary, to name specific professors with whom you might want to work.

Applications should be submitted to:

The University of Toledo Graduate College
University Hall 3240
Toledo, OH 43606-3390

You can also apply at the Graduate College's online application form. Information and application instructions are available here.

Applications for fall admission with assistantship should usually be complete by January 15, although later applications can sometimes be considered.
