Dr. Richard Weisfelder
Professor |
If you are interested in exploring international issues and becoming familiar with politics in Africa, I'm one of the people at UT that you should visit. My most important challenge is getting students in my current international problems and politics in Africa courses to see the importance of understanding the divergent perspectives that drive global discussion and debate. My American foreign policy class asks what roles Americans can and should play in dealing with global poverty, ethnic conflict, terrorism and many other pressing issues. I've recently been awarded a Fulbright-Hays Group Project grant for June-July 2008 that will allow fourteen individuals committed to teaching careers to travel for a five week seminar program in Lesotho and South Africa. They will examine the history, culture, and politics of those two countries; meet with African academics, political leaders and community organizers; and also participate in service learning activities. To reach audiences beyond my colleagues and students at UT, I try to publish articles regularly on developments in southern Africa, my primary area of research expertise. Do contact me to discuss issues where your interests and mine overlap.
