The Department of Theatre & Film University of Toledo Announces its 2008-2009 production season FALL Film Faculty Screening
Film screening featuring the recent work of faculty members in the Film program. August 29 Lab Theatre, 7:30 NextFrame Film Festival (go to guide) This touring festival focuses on cutting edge student work from around the world. Animation/Experimentation program, Sept. 12 Documentary program, Sept. 13 Lab, 7:30 Film Screening Divided We Fall: Americans in the Aftermath Co-sponsored by the Departments of English and Philosophy, Law and Social Thought, University Church and Toledo Campus Ministry This documentary follows a 20 year-old Sikh American as she sets out across the country in the aftermath of 9/11 to discover who counts as “American” in a world divided into “us” and “them.” Screening Oct. 4, Scott Park Auditorium, 7:30 p.m. Workshops Oct. 5 (CPA room/times TBA)
Coronado – by Dennis Lehane Director – Jeannette Turner In his first play Lehane, known primarily for his film (Mystic River) and TV work (The Wire), has written a searing look at the lengths to which people will go for love. October 10 – 12 and 23 - 26 Studio Theatre, 7:30 (Sundays at 2 pm) Su Friedrich screening and residency Acclaimed experimental film/video artist Su Friedrich will join us for a short residency, including two nights of screenings. Her “intensely self-revelatory, formally complex films” (New York Times) have won awards from film festivals all over the world. November 6 & 7 Screening November 7 in the Haigh Auditorium in the UT Center for the Visual Arts (next to the Toledo Museum of Art) Arabian Nights – by Mary Zimmerman Director – Irene Alby For 1001 nights, Scheherezade delays death by telling one wondrous story after another to the king. This beautiful adaptation of the classic tale celebrates the transformational power of a vivid imagination and a good story. Nov. 14 – 16 & 19 – 23 Center Theatre, 7:30 (Sundays at 2 pm) 24 Hour Plays Our fourth annual evening of short plays created, rehearsed and performed in a high energy, sleep deprived 24 hours. December 6 Studio Theatre, 7:30 pm SPRING Wong Kar-Wai film series: Join us for two films by cult phenomenon Wong Kar-Wai, part of the Hong Kong New Wave movement which has so strongly influenced contemporary American cinema. Chungking Express Express tells two visually stunning, interconnected tales of love and obsession. "If my memory of her has an expiration date, let it be 10,000 years..." Lab Theatre, January 16 Fallen Angels J. Hoberman in The Village Voice describes this film as “an intermittently violent, wildly stylized, garishly soulful gangster film with almost no narrative and a surplus of shaggy-dog digression.” Lab Theatre, February 6 Crumbs from the Table of Joy – by Lynn Nottage Director – Ed Lingan In 1950s Brooklyn, widower Godfrey Crump pressures his two daughters to follow the strict teachings of his spiritual teacher: Father Divine. But when Aunt Lily pushes herself into the scene, the authority of Father Divine—and Father Crump—are put on trial. Feb. 20 – 22 and 25 – March 1 Center Theatre, 7:30 (Sundays at 2 pm) Film screening Akira Kurosawa’s Throne of Blood Kurosawa’s Noh-influenced version of Macbeth re-imagines the dark tragedy in a ghost-filled feudal Japan. April 3 LabTheatre, 7:30 Macbeth - by William Shakespeare Director – Cornel Gabara Supernatural forces combine with human ambition to set in motion a chain of betrayal and revenge in Shakespeare’s best-known tragedy. April 17 – 19 and 22 – 26 Center Theatre, 7:30 (Sundays at 2 pm) Senior Film Student Showcases Graduating film/video seniors present overviews of their work.
