Edmund Lingan

Dr. Edmund B. Lingan joined the University of Toledo as an Assistant Professor in Theatre in August 2007.  He teaches theatre history courses, dramatic literature course, interdisciplinary theatre courses, and playwriting.  Lingan also directs main stage productions.

Before coming to The University of Toledo, Lingan acted, directed, and wrote plays that were produced in theatres in New York, NY, and Brooklyn, NY.  Lingan served as the managing director of Brooklyn’s One Arm Red, as the production and literary dramaturg for the Looking Glass Theatre in New York City, and as the Assistant to the Director of Programs at the Martin E. Segal Theatre Center.

Lingan’s area of research focuses on intersections between religion and theatre, and his articles and reviews have appeared in journals such as PAJ: A Journal of Performance and Art, Theatre Journal, Western European Stages, Religion and Theatre, Slavic and Eastern European, Performance, and Magic, Ritual, and Witchcraft.

Lingan is the founder and director of the emerging Institute for the Study of Performance and Spirituality (ISPS) and also the editor of the ISPS online, peer-reviewed journal, Performance and Spirituality. Lingan’s work with ISPS has been surveyed in the New York Sun and the Baylor Journal of Theatre and Performance.

Lingan earned a Ph.D. in Theatre Studies from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York in 2006.
