Daniel J. Watermeier
Emeritus Professor of Theatre
Watermeier joined the Department of Theatre and Film in 1984 as Professor of Theatre, served as Chair of the Department from 1984 to 1988, and became Associate Dean for the Visual and Performing Arts in 2002. Over his career he has taught a wide range of courses in theatre history, dramatic literature and criticism, and acting and directing at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In 1990, he was visiting professor of theatre at the University of Southern California. In 1991, he was designated a Master Teacher by the College of Arts and Sciences. In the Fall 1999, he was a visiting professor at Brighton University (UK). An accomplished scholar in the areas of Shakespearean stage history and American theatre and drama, he has published numerous articles and reviews in scholarly journals and five books, the most recent being The History of North American Theatre: The United States, Canada, and Mexico From Pre-Columbian Times to the Present with Felicia Londre (1998). His other books include: Edwin Booth in Performance: The Mary Isabella Stone Commentaries (1990), and Shakespeare Companies and Festivals: An International Guide (1995). He also has staged productions of over thirty plays. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1968. The recipient of several fellowships including a prestigious John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship in 1980-81, he has served on the governing boards of the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST), the American Society for Theatre Research (ASTR), and the Theatre Literary Association (TLA). In 2001 he was awarded the University’s Outstanding Researcher Award. In 2002 he was made a Fellow of the College of Fellows of the American Theatre.
