Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Are incoming students required to have a laptop?
A. Students are not required to have a laptop, but it is highly recommended.

Q. What is the virtual lab?
A. The virtual lab is a laptop checkout program soley available to College of Business students. First time checkout students must sign a waiver before using the virtual lab. The lab is located in ST125.

Q. Who can check out a laptop?
A. Laptop checkout is limited to students who are enrolled in at least 1 business class for the current semester or are registered students at the College of Business Administration for the current semester. All students who are enrolled pay a technology fee for this service.

Q. Who can check out PhD laptops?
A. PhD Laptops can be checked out to any COBA PhD students from Dr. Hassan HassabElnaby in ST3034. 

Q. What are the costs of using the virtual lab?
A. There are no costs for using this system or its components. The lab is funded by the College of Business technology fee. The only costs that may incur are fines for lost or damaged equipment, as well as late returns (overdue laptops).

Q. What are the times available for checkout?
A.Currently you can check out a laptop for 3 hours between 8:30 AM and 10 PM Mondays - Thursdays and 8:30 AM - 5 PM on Fridays. During Fall and Spring Semesters. During summer semester, the hours are 8:30 AM - 9 PM, Monday - Thursday. 8:30 AM - 5 PM Friday.

Q. How long can I check out a laptop for?
A. The laptop must be returned before 3 hours and before the virtual lab closes for the day.

Q. Where can I use the laptop?
A. While the laptop is wireless, there are limitations on where it can be used. Currently, complete access is available within Stranahan Hall, Carlson Library, Law School, Health and Human Services, and partial access within the Student Union, Rocket Hall, Snyder Memorial and Savage Hall. Q. How can I connect my personal laptop to the Wireless Network?
A. Please see the Wireless Connectivity page.

Q. Where can I print?
A. College of Business students may print in rooms ST1019, ST125, ST127, and ST120.

Q. Can I print in color?
A. Yes, room ST125 offers color printing. Students must ask the lab attendant for assistance.

Q. How can I access my H: drive from home?
A. Directions can be found here.

Q. How can I convert a Microsoft Word document to a PDF file?
A. Students and faculty may use their UTAD account to convert documents here.

Q. How can I activate my UTAD account?
A. Directions can be found here.

Q. As a UT student, am I eligible to purchase discounted software like Microsoft Office?
A. Yes, students can find a list of discounted software here.
