Degrees Offered

The Department of Communication offers a baccalaureate degree program for a Bachelor of Arts in General Communication or Communication Disorders. Those choosing general communication may then select classes from areas that include, but are not limited to, human communication, journalism, broadcasting and public relations.


Requirements for the General Communication Major

1.All general communication majors complete the following communication classes: COMM 2000, 2400, 3870, 4910.

2.All general communication majors must take a minimum of 8 hours and a maximum of 16 hours from the following Applied Communication classes: COMM 2100, 2120, 2150, 2210, 2220, 2600, 2630 2810, 2990, 3150, 3270, 3280, 3610, 3810, 3830, 3880 and 4610. Independent Study hours (COMM 2990) may not count toward the minimum requirement of 8 hours.

3.All general communication majors must take a minimum of 8 hours and a maximum of 12 hours from the following Conceptual Communication classes: COMM 3180, 3820, 3840, 3850, 3860, 4090, 4210, 4220, 4250, 4330, 4620, 4810, 4830, 4900 and 4990. Independent Study hours (COMM 4990) may not count toward the minimum requirement of 8 hours.

4.A minimum of 32 semester hours is required in the major. A maximum of 40 semester hours is permitted by the college.

5.All general communication majors must take a minimum of 18 semester hours in related areas. These classes are to be chosen in consultation with a departmental adviser.


Requirements for the Communication Disorders Major

1.All Communication Disorders majors must take the following classes: COMM 2410, 2420, 2430, 2440, 2460, 3440, 3450, 3460, 3470, 3480, 3490, 4410, 4420, 4430, 4480 and 4490.

2.The students must take the following classes from related areas: SPED 3130, SPED 3610 and SPED 3720. The remaining related hours are to be taken in consultation with a departmental adviser.


Honors in Communication

Qualified students may be invited to work for the citation "Honors in Communication."

1.Admission. Communication majors who are enrolled in University Honors may enroll for Department of Communication Honors.

2.Requirements. In addition to meeting the requirements for the undergraduate major, at least 11 of those hours must be designated Communication Honors. Five hours of Honors Thesis credit will satisfy the research requirement. Minimum GPA requirements are the same as those for College Honors.
