Degrees Offered

Linguistics offers a program for a Bachelor of Arts degree.


Degree Requirements

Requirements for the Undergraduate Major: A major of 30 hours in linguistics must include the following: (a) LING/ENGL 3150, LING 3160, 3170, 3180, 3190; (b) one course in historical linguistics chosen from ENGL/LING 4100, FREN 4040, GERM 4500, RUS 4070, SPAN 4070; (c) one course in the structure of a language chosen from ENGL/LING 4110, 4120, (with adviser's approval) LING 4980; FREN 4010, 4020; GERM 4010, 4020; RUS 4110; SPAN 4110; (d) three courses chosen from the following (or other appropriate courses with adviser's approval): ANTH 2800; LING 4130, 4150, 4170, 4180, (with adviser's approval) 4980, (with adviser's approval) 4990; PHIL 3060, 3600, 3630, 4060, 4300, 4600, 4650; PSY 2400, 3400, 3410.

Related Requirements: To satisfy the related requirement, linguistics majors may select any of the minors offered by departments and programs within the College of Arts and Sciences. Those offered by Anthropology, English, Foreign Languages, Psychology, Philosophy and Speech Pathology are recommended. Alternatively, a student may select courses from a variety of departments and programs with the approval of the linguistics adviser.


Minor in Linguistics

A minimum of 21 hours is required for the minor in Linguistics. Students must take ENGL/LING 3150 and at least one of the courses that are required of students majoring in Linguistics: LING 3160 Grammatical Description I: Phonology LING 3170 Grammatical Description II: Syntax LING 3180 Grammatical Description III: Morphology LING 3190 Sociolinguistics

Tosatisfy the remaining 15 required hours, students may take any of the courses that can satisfy the Linguistics major.


Honors in Linguistics

Students whose GPA after completing at least 15 of the 30 hours required within the linguistics major is 3.6 or higher in those courses are eligible to participate in Honors in Linguistics. In addition to satisfactorily completing an honors thesis, the student may, under appropriate circumstances, participate in another department's Senior Honors Seminar. The designation "Honors" on the diploma will be given to students who receive agrade of A on the honors thesis and maintain a 3.6 GPA in linguistics.
