Degrees Offered

The Nursing program offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. The classes in the nursing major are taught by faculty affiliated with the School of Nursing at the Medical College of Ohio. The School of Nursing is accredited by the National League for Nursing and has full approval of the Ohio Board of Nursing.

Basic Program

Students are admitted to the nursing major at the end of the sophomore year and due to availability of clinical placement, enrollment is limited. Applications to the nursing program must be submitted by January 1 for the following Fall class. Selective admission is dependent upon:

1.Completion of prerequisite courses with a minimum grade of C in each course. Only two prerequisite courses with a grade of C or lower may be repeated one time each.

2.Completion of prerequisite courses by the end of Spring Semester preceding admission to the major. The prerequisite courses include CHEM 1210 and CHEM 1220 with the lab 1270; BIOL 2170; MATH 1180; English Composition I and II; PSY 1010 and 2500; NURS 2550 (Anatomy); NURS 2570 (Physiology); and NURS 2590 (Microbiology). The Nursing courses are taken at the Medical College of Ohio campus.

3.A cumulative GPA of 2.5 in all course work.

A course on basic computer use must be completed prior to beginning the nursing major. The following Arts and Sciences requirements in the lower division must be completed prior to beginning the clinical nursing courses: PHIL 3400 or 3370; PSY 1010; BIOL 3210; an approved course in statistics. Proficiency in a single foreign language through the intermediate level is required.

Fees for the nursing program are the same as for all other degree programs. Additional charges, however, are required for uniforms, professional liability insurance; specific health tests, immunizations and physical examination; lab fees, class workbooks, senior comprehensive examinations and senior convocation. Transportation to classes at the Medical College of Ohio and to the clinical placements is the responsibility of the student.

Requirements for the Undergraduate Major for the Basic Program

The major in Nursing includes the following:

NURS 2550, 2570, 2590, 3010, 3110, 3120, 3130, 3140, 3210, 3620, 3630, 3640, 4010, 4020, 4030, 4950, 4960. All courses in the major must be taken for a grade. A minimum grade of C is necessary for a student to progress to the next course. A minimum GPA of 2.0 in the Nursing major is necessary to remain in the major and for graduation.

Courses specified above constitute an intensive undergraduate program of study in baccalaureate nursing. A minimum of 124 semester hours of credit is required for graduation.

Honors Program in Nursing

Students who have shown outstanding ability in their freshman and sophomore course work and who show interest and potential for outstanding performance in the Nursing major will be invited to work for the citation "Honors in Nursing."

Admission to the departmental Honors Program is based on a minimum of junior standing, overall GPA of 3.5, two letters of recommendation from university faculty members and an interview with the departmental honors adviser. Each student seeking to earn the honors citation at graduation must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 overall and in the Nursing major, successfully complete two departmental honors recognition courses for a total of 6 semester hours, and do an independent research project culminating in a written thesis and an oral presentation of the results. Departmental Honors and college Honors can be taken concurrently. The Honors Program is open to students in both tracks in the major.

Track for Registered Nurses (R.N./B.S.N.)

The R.N./B.S.N. track admits Registered Nurse students who are graduates of Diploma or Associate's degree programs. The R.N. student achieves the same terminal objectives of the nursing program as the basic student. However, in recognition of previous learning experiences and unique characteristics of the adult learner, it is believed that the R.N. may do so in an accelerated and flexible manner. The faculty believes that the adult learner possesses varying degrees of knowledge and see the faculty role as augmenting the previous knowledge base to facilitate a transition to baccalaureate nursing. The nursing courses and the required supporting University courses provide the opportunity for this transition.

The program of study consists of 124 semester hours of credit, which can be earned on a full time or part time basis and includes general education courses and professional upper division nursing courses. Criteria for seeking admission to the major are:

1.Admission to the University.

2.Completion of prerequisite courses with a minimum grade of C in each course. Only two prerequisite courses with a grade of C or lower may be repeated one time each.

3.Completion of prerequisite courses. The prerequisite courses include CHEM 1210; CHEM 1220 with the lab 1270; BIOL 2170; MATH 1180; English Composition I and II; PSY 1010 and 2500; NURS 2550 (Anatomy); NURS 2570 (Physiology); and NURS 2590 (Microbiology).

4.A cumulative GPA of 2.5 in all course work.

5.Graduation from NLN-accredited nursing program.

6.Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Ohio
