RTHT - 1010 FIRST AID/CPR
[1 hour] American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary course, along with a Basic First Aid course. Students successfully completing the course will receive the National Safety Council certification cards in both first aid and CPR, Basic Life Support, Health Care Provider level, by the American Heart Association.


RTHT - 1150 FUNDAMENTALS OF PATIENT ASSESSMENT
[2 hours] An introductory experience in respiratory care, including the skills necessary for basic assessment and treatment of the pulmonary patient with oxygen. Medical ethics and interpersonal communications skills along with protection of the patient and staff from infection will also be covered. Corequisite: RTHT 1160


RTHT - 1160 RESPIRATORY PHYSIOLOGY
[3 hours] A study of respiratory physiology, including gas laws, gas transport, and the mechanics of ventilation. Corequisite: RTHT 1150


RTHT - 1250 AIRWAY CARE AND MAINTENANCE
[2 hours] Discussion and practice of procedures used to establish and maintain a patent airway. Artificial airways, aerosol therapy, Intermittent Positive Pressure Breathing, and bronchopulmonary drainage are included in this course. Prerequisite: RTHT 1150, 1160; CPR certification Corequisite: RTHT 1260


RTHT - 1260 CARDIOPULMONARY THERAPEUTICS
[3 hours] Discussion of the principles and agents used in the pharmacologic treatment of cardiopulmonary diseases. Prerequisite: RTHT 1150, 1160 Corequisite: RTHT 1250


RTHT - 1350 PATIENT MONITORING
[3 hours] Laboratory and clinical experiences are provided in invasive and non invasive procedures used to monitor patient status, including blood gas analysis, pulse oximetry and capnography. Prerequisite: RTHT 1250, 1260 Corequisite: RTHT 1360


RTHT - 1360 ACID BASE BALANCE
[3 hours] This course includes a discussion of acid base and electrolyte balance, and interpretation of laboratory values. Prerequisite: RTHT 1250, 1260 Corequisite: RTHT 1350


RTHT - 2450 ADVANCED THERAPEUTICS
[4 hours] Theoretical principles involved in the initiation, maintenance and discontinuance of mechanical ventilation. Laboratory experiments on a variety of adult mechanical ventilators. Clinical experiences that encompass the total care of the critically ill patient. Prerequisite: RTHT 1350, 1360 Corequisite: RTHT 2460


RTHT - 2460 CARDIOPULMONARY PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
[3 hours] Discussion of the etiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations and treatment of diseases affecting the cardiopulmonary systems is presented. Case studies involving various disease states will also be reviewed. Prerequisite: RTHT 1350, 1360 Corequisite: RTHT 2450


RTHT - 2550 MECHANICAL VENTILATION OF THE ADULT
[3 hours] Theoretical principles involved in the initiation, maintenance and discontinuance of mechanical ventilation on the adult patient. Special emphasis on the monitoring of hemodynamic values in critically ill patients. Prerequisite: RTHT 2450, 2460 Corequisite: RTHT 2560


RTHT - 2560 CARDIOPULMONARY DIAGNOSTICS
[3 hours] Discussion of the theory of cardiopulmonary diagnostics to include cardiac rhythm analysis, hemodynamic monitoring, spirometry, and x-ray interpretation. Prerequisite: RTHT 2450, 2460 Corequisite: RTHT 2550


RTHT - 2990 INDEPENDENT STUDY
[1 - 4 hours] A course designed to provide educational opportunities in a specialized academic area under the direct supervision of a faculty member.
