Daniel L. Merritt, Interim Chairperson

The program in Vocational Education in the Department of Educational Leadership offers students a variety of career opportunities in secondary schools, technical colleges and business and industry. Licensure programs are available to prepare vocational teachers and administrators. Programs not requiring licensure also are available for individuals desiring careers in technical college teaching or business and industrial training.

Vocational Education Majors in Vocational Education: Health Occupations and Trade and Industry

Courses in Vocational Education leading to a baccalaureate degree may be arranged to complete Ohio's licensure requirements for a career in teaching or to prepare students for teaching in a technical college, business and industry. Each prospective vocational teacher will combine occupational experience with academic course work to complete the degree requirements. Recent work experience has been the foundation of vocational education that assures recipients state-of-the-art technical instruction.

Vocational Education (2-plus-2)

The program allows a community-technical student to transfer up to 66 semester hours of course work (provided grades are C or better) for the undergraduate program. The student must have completed the Associate's Degree and within that degree have completed selected courses for the University Core Curriculum. Otherwise, course work is transferred to the university on a course-for-course basis.

This 2-plus-2 program consists of three phases and is designed to prepare students to teach in secondary vocational schools, technical colleges or business and industry. The first two years (phase one) are spent completing the associate degree technology program, while the second two years (phase two) are spent completing teacher education course work required for the bachelor of vocational education degree. Phase three is the accumulation of two years of employment in an occupational field. The State of Ohio will issue a vocational teaching licensure to a holder of a bachelor's degree in vocational education with two years of recent work experience in the subject area of teaching and the examination required by the State Board of Education.

Final approval of course selections should be obtained from the adviser and one copy must be filed in the College of Education and Allied Professions' Student Services Center.

Non-Degree (Licensure Only)

Any person having five years of recent work experience in any occupation (or a combination of work experience and college credit) may be eligible for the initial two-year teaching licensure in that occupation. Teaching eligibility will be determined by submitting the completed "Qualification Evaluation Form for Vocational Teacher" (VE 36) to the Ohio Department of Education, Division of Vocational and Career Education, and completing an examination prescribed by the State Board of Education to verify basic skills and technical competence in the teaching field.

Individuals recruited from business and industry with less than a baccalaureate degree in vocational education may receive a Five-Year Vocational Licensure after having completed the following requirements:

1.Performance: Evidence of satisfactory performance as an instructor and the recommendation of the College of Education and Allied Professions.

2.Experience: Two years of supervised teaching experience on provisional vocational licensure.

3.Professional Preparation: Completion of a minimum of 24 semester hours of teacher improvement work.

4.Completion of an entry-year program.
