Department of Special Education Services

Martha Carroll, Chairperson

Undergraduate students in the Department of Special Education Services pursue preservice baccalaureate and non-degree State of Ohio teacher licensure for intervention specialist in mild-moderate needs, moderate-intensive needs, vision impairment and early childhood moderate-intensive needs. There are two tracks to obtaining a teacher license. Students may pursue parallel baccalaureate degrees in the College of Arts and Sciences. This gives the student two degrees and prepares the student for two professional fields of endeavor. Dual programs in some Arts and Science majors that complement special education have been designed. The student may pursue a single degree with an enhanced arts and science component. In addition to the State of Ohio teacher licensure, students also may pursue coursework to meet the requirements for adult services of the Ohio Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities.

The majors in Special Education consist of seven basic components: University Core, Orientation Course, Professional Education, Special Education Core, Licensure Area, Internship/Student Teaching and Additional Arts And Science/Dual Major Requirements. There are several dual degree options available.

All students in Special Education are required to meet the general admission and exit requirements established by the College of Education and Allied Professions. Because the courses in Special Education are tightly sequenced, students are urged to establish and maintain contact with the academic advisers beginning with the first term enrolled. Students apply for admission to the department during the spring semester of their sophomore year or the fall semester of their junior year.
