    Case Study

The University of Toledo Medical Center (UTMC) oopened a new state-of-the-art clinical skills center in July 2003.  The Hillebrand Clinical Skills Center is located in the newly built MUO/Mercy Center for Creative Educaiton building, a $10 million, 42,000 square-foot building located on the university's campus.

The Center Provides a facility for the training and assessment of students across a variety of health care disciplines including; medical students, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and residents.  Other institutions such as Flower Hospital, Toledo Hospital, Mercy Hospital and the University of Findlay have also utilized their services.

The 4,500 square foot facility includes:

    • Integration of technology to enhance student learning
    • Computerized clinical skills examination system
    • State-of-the-art audiovisual system
    • 13 examiniation rooms
    • Monitoring room for observing 13 student/patient interactions
    • Conference room
    • Student debriefing room

One of the key features of the new facility is the computerized clinical skills examiniation system.  This saves the staff hours of preparation time.  In addition, the system creates a variety of reports including student and group scores within seconds of completion.  Each standardized patient is trained on how to enter the data into the system.  It is not uncommon for SPs to have very little or no computer experiene and sometimes even using a mouse can be a challenge.  The system is very easy-to-use, which made training a cinch.

The Center for Creative Instruction (CCI) worked with us to design and create a system that meets our operational needs - without paper and pencil!
