ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY REVEALED®

Anatomy & Physiology Revealed® (APR) is an interactive multimedia experience that allows self-guided exploration of the key structures and physiological processes of every human body system.

In 1997, the creation of Anatomy Revealed®, an award-winning product for medical student education began at the Medical College of Ohio (which later merged with the University of Toledo). Starting in 2003, the development team joined forces with McGraw-Hill Publishing Company to produce a product for undergraduate student education called Anatomy & Physiology Revealed┬«(APR). Since its release, the product has been used in over 400 schools and 25 countries, has won numerous awards, and is currently in its third version.

APR is developed by a team from the Center for Creative Instruction (CCI) and the Department of Neurosciences at the University of Toledo. Authors include: Roy E. Schneider, M.S., Center for Creative Instruction, Mark H. Hankin, Ph.D., Dennis E. Morse, Ph.D., and Carol Bennett-Clarke, Ph.D., Department of Neurosciences.

INTERACTIVE (TEE) REVIEW®

Interactive Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE) Review® is a self-assessment examination program that provides over 400 questions and answers, more than 600 TEE video clips, and numerous references to Savage and Aronson's Comprehensive Textbook of Intraoperative Transesophageal Echocardiography. Users learn at their own pace by browsing content in study or test mode. Video clips provide an opportunity to test skills and allow for unlimited generation of practice exams. Interactive TEE Review® software was developed for Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, a unit of Wolters Kluwer Health.

FRUIT EXPOS3D

FruitExpos3d is real CT imagery in 3D of apples, kiwi, pomegranate, star fruit, and more! Our app, sold in the Apple and Android stores, allows you to explore more than two dozen fruit from skin to seed, rotating and peeling away the layers to discover just what is really inside the fruit you have eaten. Marvel at the beauty and incredible 3D internal anatomy and structure of fruit.

FruitExpos3D also includes fun facts about each fruit and an interactive game.

MEDICAL ILLUSTRATION

Visual imagery is key to effective scientific communication. Medical illustrators use knowledge and imagination to transform highly technical content into a clear and concise visual story that explains and teaches the unseen worlds of science and medicine.

CCI's medical illustrators are professionally certified and accredited artists trained (in science, medicine, biology and art) in creating instructional and informative art that communicates complex medical, biological and scientific related knowledge to any array of audiences. Being on both the scientific and artistic sides of a project, our medical illustrators are experienced in interacting and collaborating with a variety of professionals, including physicians, health-science professionals, software engineers and web-designers.

Our range of traditional and digital artwork appears in a variety of media such as textbooks, advertisements, journals, videos, exhibits, lecture presentations, multimedia and projection media. Medical illustrators also work in three dimensions, creating models for anatomical teaching and medical procedure simulation and volumetric visualizations of medical datasets.

NORTHWEST OHIO REC

The Northwest Ohio Regional Extension Center (NWOREC) had a need to market the services that they provide. CCI was contracted to create an animation that would be both informational and entertaining. We created the characters, recorded the audio, provided the illustration and graphic design, and programmed the application in flash.

The animation describes in a humorous way how NWOREC assists providers in NW Ohio with selection, implementation, and meaningful use of electronic health records in their practices. The animation was downloaded to a USB Flash drive to be distributed to doctors and medical office managers in the area.

WEBSIM HEALTH

WebSim Health is a self-paced interactive multimedia tool that is being developed in conjunction with Pinnacle Technology Group, Inc., an industry leader and expert in state-of-the-art medical training products. WebSim Health features anatomy, physiology, and assessment modules to supplement and assist the instructor and students' classroom education with visual and auditory experiences for performing cardiac and respiratory assessments. By using the product, students will build confidence and increase their knowledge to better prepare for nursing clinicals. WebSim also features the SimScope, a stethoscope-like device that simulates hearing real patients' heart and breath sounds.

iCARE TRAINING

iCARE training is an online learning module to teach healthcare professionals about extreme patient-centered care through "CARE" - Communication, Access, Respect, and Excellence. The training features a video guide who leads the user through the training, which also includes interviews and vignettes to engage the user. In addition, quizzes are built-in to gauge competency. Progress and completion of each user is tracked throughout the training.

INNOVATIVE 3D DESIGN

Using a combination of CT data and new CT viewers, we create 3D visualization and animations that allow us to look inside the human body revealing the unique and dynamic world of anatomy. However, it is not just human anatomy but also structural anatomy of CT scanned objects that open new opportunities for product development and design. For instance, using CT data from a scanned foot inside a Nike shoe during a flexed sprinting position, we enhanced the understanding of foot anatomy and structural relationships within the shoe as well as shoe construction. The foot and shoe 3D images were then projected on the CAD Wall in the Inter Professional Immersive Simulation Center. By turning the images into a movie we were able to spin and rotate the image, use different levels of transparency and reveal multiple levels and intricate details of both foot and shoe.

Our visualization and animations have generated interest from businesses, education and research sectors. Our access to content, hardware, software, and expertise, provides us with the opportunity to create dynamic views and a unique experience that promotes health care awareness and product design.
