The CD, "Coping with Cancer: A guide for women," offers tips and advice for coping with the wide variety of the additional problems that come with cancer, such as depression, financial trouble and sexual dysfunction.
"This is a supplement to chemotherapy and other clinical treatments," says Dr. Marijo Tamburrino, professor and chair of psychiatry. "We all believe patients are best served by a holistic approach."
"Coping with Cancer" is a collaborative production of the UT Department of Psychiatry, Cancer Institute, and Center for Creative Instruction. Creation of the CD was supported by a grant from Wyeth-Ayerst Pharmaceuticals.
It's believed the CD may be one of only a few of its kind produced to address this important need.
Other topics explored in the CD through the use of text, video clips, music selections and art displays include nutrition, relaxation, and spirituality. And since cancer impacts all aspects of a person's family life, there's a section devoted to family issues.
Currently, copies of the CD are being given at no charge to patients of the UMC Cancer Institute and are also available for viewing at local Toledo libraries and at the Victory Center, a cancer support center.
