The first step is to open your image in MS Paint. You can access MS Paint through Start—Programs—Accessories—Paint.
Once you have Paint open, go to File—Open and locate your file...
| As you can see here our original picture file is very large. In fact, in order to see the entire image we have to scroll Up, Down, Left, and Right. If we were to upload this image into the CMS and display it on a web page it would be entirely too large. We are going to fix this. |
| On the Menu bar select Image—Attributes... or.. Press Ctrl+E |
The box that comes up shows us the various attributes of the picture file. The important things to look at here are the Size on disk: and the Width: and Height:. The larger the file size is, the longer it will take to load on the viewers screen. The width and height refer to the width and height of the image in pixels. About 50% of internet users in the world have their computer monitors set to display a maximum 1024x768 pixels, while about 20% of US users are still viewing at 800x600. Even with the higher pixel display, the user will still not be able to view this image because it is 1399x1494 pixels. Click OK.

| On the Menu Bar select Image—Stretch/Skew... or Press Ctrl+w |
This brings up the Stretch and Skew dialog box. The only things we will adjust within this box are the Horizontal and Vertical percentages under Stretch. ************************************************* |
| We can estimate based on the LARGE size of our image that we probably want our newly resized image to be about 20% of the original images size. So we modify the values in the Horizontal and Vertical stretch to be 20% for both the horizontal and vertical. When you have entered your value press OK. Note: If you are not sure what to enter, just take a guess you can always undo your changes and try again! |
Now we can see our newly re-sized image. This is much better as you can clearly see the entire image without scrolling. In fact there is plenty of blank space on our screen. If your image appears too small, or not small enough yet.. Either go to Edit—Undo on the Menu bar, or press Ctrl+Z, and try adjusting the values in the Stretch/Skew... box again. We are now ready to save the image. It is a smart idea to keep your original image intact so you have a full resolution copy to make changes to later or to print. So choose File—Save As... on the Menu Bar and save your new image with a unique name. |
| If you want to you can go back to the Attributes box after saving and see how the image has changed. In our picture you can see that the Size on disk is now MUCH smaller, as well as the Width and Height are now a great size for any place on the web. |
| You are now ready to upload your image! |
