Re:
PHPR 6440 Infectious Diseases / Fall semester 1997

Please find the attached schedule for the PHPR 6440 Infectious Diseases.

GOAL: The goal of the module is to introduce the student to infectious diseases pharmacotherapy. The antimicrobial selection process and specific infections will be reviewed and discussed. In addition, the module will try to review controversial topics and new agents in a group participation format. Students will be asked to defend a certain treatment or discuss the pros and cons of the use of a specific agent. It is my hope to encourage students explore lecture topics beyond what is given to them in a class period. Students are expected to use other resources to extract information to present in the group presentations.

READINGS: The reading for most lectures will consist of applicable chapters or chapters in the required text: Pharmacotherapy, a Pathophysiologic Approach; 3rd edition. Dipiro JT, Talbert RL, Yee GC et al (eds.). Additional reading assignments will be given in some lectures and you will be informed of this by the individual instructor. Students are expected to read the required reading before each class.

CLASS TIMES: Class time and topics are noted in the attached materials.

CLASS PARTICIPATION: Students are expected to participate during the class period especially during the case sessions. Class participation is worth 20 points. Questions and comments are strongly encouraged. Occasionally, students will be assigned group projects which are to presented during the class period. These group projects will be worth a total of 60 points. These groups assignments and class participation (total of 80 points) will account for 20% of your final grade.

CLASS ASSIGNMENT: All class assignments except for one assignment will be described on the first page of the lecture handout. The 6th assignment requires each students (groups of 2) to pull an infectious disease related article from the newspaper or news magazine. The student will then present these article(s) to the class and explain how it relates to the any topic we have reviewed in class. The student will also discuss the impact of this article on pharmaceutical care. In other words, how would it affect your pharmacy practice either in the clinical, retail, or industrial setting. All groups will make their on November 5th. Students will be given 10 minutes to make their presentation.

EXAMS: Two exams, a mid-term and a cumulative final exams, are scheduled for the semester.

OFFICE HOURS: I will be available at the following times for questions: Monday, Wednesday and Friday: 10 AM to 12 PM. If these times are inconvenient for any student, appointments can be scheduled.

GRADES: A grade of ³ 80% is considered passing grade.

Other details will be covered during the first day of class.
