Born in Damascus, Syria, Mysoon Rizk came to the United States as a young child, growing up primarily in Greensboro, North Carolina. She first came to Ohio in 1980, while attending Oberlin College, from which she graduated in 1983. Since then, she has lived in New York City, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, where she earned a second bachelor’s degree as well as a master’s degree and a doctoral degree. Since graduate school, Dr. Rizk has focused her attention on the work of New York-based artist David Wojnarowicz (1954-1992), whose Estate she was the first person to catalog, shortly after he died of AIDS-related illnesses.
