Attendees will experience a multimedia presentation by Lt. Kimm Williams, a 28-year veteran of the Toledo Fire and Rescue Department. He will touch on many aspects of fire safety – both inside and outside of the home.
A five-minute, real time video of a night club fire demonstrates how quickly a fire can engulf a building and emphasizes the need for everyone to be aware of their surroundings especially in a crowded area.
The event culminates in the opportunity to navigate a smoke-filled hallway that safely mimics the visual impairment conditions one might experience during an actual fire. The smoke used is a non-toxic variety common to DJs and haunted houses. Participation in this portion of the presentation is optional.
What Should I Bring?
Bring only yourself! You will not need to take any notes. The smoke-filled hallway exercise will require you to crawl on the padded floor so the less weighted down you are, the easier and more fun it will be.
What Should I Wear?
Because you will be required to crawl through the smoke, we recommend that you avoid wearing clothing that you might feel uncomfortable in while on your hands and knees (e.g., short skirts are not recommended).
Proof of Attendance
For those students attending the Great Escape as a course requirement, Certificates of Training will be provided at the conclusion of the program.
