Adaptive Physical Education Endorsement
The On-Line Graduate Endorsement in Adapted Physical Education is designed to prepare licensed physical educators to teach youth with disabilities in a variety of physical education / physical activity settings. Successful completion of the coursework leads to recommendation for Ohio’s Adapted Physical Education endorsement. Applications are accepted throughout the year. Courses are offered on a fixed schedule each year. View the PDF brochure.
The on-line nature of the endorsement provides accessibility to practicing professional physical educators who are unable to take traditional, on-campus graduate courses. The University of Toledo is regionally accredited by the North Central Association (NCA) and is authorized to offer degrees online.

PED 5170 Adapted Physical Education (3) Evidenced-based and philosophical pedagogy of teaching students with low incidence disabilities within a variety of adapted physical education settings is examined. Facilitates the application of appropriate pedagogy to implement current legislation. |

SPED 5260 Family and Professional Relations in Special Education (3) Effective parent and professional partnerships will be explored. Interpersonal communication skills, legal issues, effective models for home-school communication, and differences in culture, values and family expectations will be discussed. |

PED 5950 Workshop in Exercise Science and Physical Education (3) Critical examination of a variety of traditional and non-traditional assessment methods appropriate for children with disabilities in a variety of physical education settings. Provides practical experience using assessment methods and prepares the physical educator to participate on the Individualized Education Plans (IEP) committee. |

PED 6940 Internship in Exercise Science (3) Provides opportunities within an adapted physical education field experience context to use and refine the strategies for planning and implementing physical education services to children with disabilities. Practicum hours required are 140. Prerequisites: PED 5170 and PED 5950. |
To be considered for admission into the program, a candidate must:
- Be a licensed physical educator in Ohio. Documentation is required and
- Submit a completed online graduate application (special student status application) and pay the accompanying application fee. Students seeking to apply the courses from the endorsement to the Master of Education in Physical Education (Adapted Physical Education track) will need to complete the regular graduate student application form.
