Dr. Hamer's research interests include continuities and discontinuities between traditional and institutional education, and the use of folkloristic theories, methods, and materials in promoting democratic and social reconstructionist education.

Most of Dr. Hamer's courses involve students in Service Learning, much of which she
facilitates through the Padua Alliance, a collaboration between the department and
a local community center.

Undergraduate level: Schooling and Democratic Society, and Introduction to Education
Padua Alliance for Education and Empowerment (PAEE)
The Padua Alliance for Education and Empowerment (PAEE) is a collaboration of the Padua Community Center & the University of Toledo Department of Educational Foundations and Leadership, formed in 2007. Its current work is to support educational opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students in college classes, and for P-12 students through extracurricular educational activities through collaborative, democratic educational activities. The Padua Alliance primarily serves the Padua Center neighborhood bounded by Brown Avenue to Hawley Street, and Klondike Street to Dorr Street, including census tracts 32 and 35. It also provides opportunities for residents from throughout Toledo, northwest Ohio, and southwest Michigan as well as international students.

UT@TPS was established in 2010 to support parents and community members to continue their education and thus leading the way for Toledo's children and youth in school retention. Any adult is welcome to attend UT@TPS and it is not required to live in any particular neighborhood or to have a child(ren) enrolled in a TPS school. Classes are held in Toledo Public School buildings and follow the TPS daily schedule and calendar. Parents can take their children to school, attend their own classes, and be ready to pick up their children in the afternoon.

Community Conversations Course New Course!
This course is for graduate students who want to learn how schools can engage with communities through authentic, sustainable commitment to positive action. Alternate weeks, graduate students will participate in facilitated conversations among teachers, parents, K-12 students, religious leaders, teacher educators, activists, and others who have great insights into what students need to succeed. Each conversation will move from ideas to actions, and over the course of the semester an action plan will be implemented. Conversations will be free, open to all, and well-advertised, and will build upon community networks already in place. Topics will include teaching students of color, teaching in low-income communities, culturally relevant discipline, the school-to-prison pipeline, working with parents & community members, and other topics as generated through the conversations.
