The Licensure and Master's Program (LAMP) in Middle Childhood and Adolescent to Young Adult

The Middle Childhood and Adolescent Licensure and Master’s Program (LAMP) is a unique blend of theory with practice, developed and implemented by an interdisciplinary team of educators.  This one-year program is designed to meet the needs of already degreed adult learners and is a comprehensive graduate program. Individuals who already hold a baccalaureate degree in a major other than education can become a licensed teacher in either middle school (grades 4 -9) or adolescent to young adult (grades 7 -12), in the State of Ohio, in one year. LAMP graduates earn an initial four-year resident educator license and a Master of Education degree.

LAMP is a highly competitive and rigorous program that begins every fall semester in August and ends the following summer in June.  During that year, LAMP Interns serve a one-year internship with a mentor teacher in a classroom setting while completing the required coursework on The University of Toledo’s campus. Students also have the option of beginning the program in January and completing it in 1.5 years.

Education courses and classroom experiences work hand-in-hand to give students a strong grounding; research has shown that our LAMP students finish these programs with the skills and knowledge of 3rd year teachers.

In 2014 the Middle Grades and AYA LAMP programs received the award for Outstanding Field Experience from Ohio Association of Teacher Educators.

Students who are accepted into the program will complete a LAMP application essay and a formal interview.  Student selection is based on content GPA, overall GPA, a successful interview, essay review, and passing of the Ohio Assessments for Educators' Content Assessment.

First Step:  Prospective students must complete the LAMP Application for Review of Coursework, and then should meet with the LAMP advisor. Any required content-area courses must be completed before you can begin the LAMP program. The deadline for the review of coursework is April 1; for those beginning in January, it is November 15.

Second Step: Applications for the 1-year LAMP program must be submitted to the Graduate School by May 1st. For those wishing to begin in January, applications are due October 1st. Students are required to complete an application interview as well.

Students must pass appropriate content exams as specified by the Ohio Department of Education prior to the start of the one-year sequence in August.
