    Admission to Master's Degree Programs

Please review this information before completing the Graduate School Application .

Following are the requirements for admission to The University of Toledo Graduate School.

    1. Baccalaureate or professional degree earned from a department of approved standing and granted by an accredited college or university.
    2. A 2.70 cumulative GPA for all previous academic work or indicated performance under Sections 5 or 6 below.
    3. Prerequisite academic work which gives evidence that the applicant should be able to pursue effectively the graduate work in the department in which specialization is desired.
    4. Acceptance by the college and/or department concerned.
    5. All applicants with less than a 2.70 cumulative GPA on all undergraduate work are required to forward results of the Graduate Record Examination Aptitude and/or other appropriate qualifying examinations as specific by the department concerned. On the basis of the results of these examinations, the department will make a recommendation to the Graduate School.
    6. It is within the discretion of the various departments to require the Graduate Record Examination or other qualifying examinations for all applicants. The Graduate Record Examination is required of all applicants for graduate work in the following departments: Chemistry, Counseling & School Psychology, Exercise Science,  History, Geology, Public Administration, Political Science, Speech and Language Pathology, and Psychology. All applicants for graduate work in the College of Business Administration are required to take the Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT). The College of Education requires the GRE for all doctoral applicants, except Higher Education.
    7. International students are invited to apply for admission to the Graduate School. In addition to the requirements for regular admission, all students from non-English speaking countries must achieve satisfactory scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language and the aptitude and advanced sections of the Graduate Record Examination. All international students must also demonstrate that they have adequate financial resources for their graduate education before they can be admitted. International students are required to complete a Financial Statement and must enclose supporting documentation.

In addition to Graduate School requirements, the College of Education requires the following:

    1. A bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year institution.
    2. An overall grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.7 on a 4.0 scale in all undergraduate work. Students who fail to meet this requirement may be considered for provisional admission, provided they demonstrate excellent promise for graduate study.
    3. Three recommendations concerning the prospective graduate student, which, depending upon the student’s status at the time, may come from such sources as the undergraduate major adviser, current employer, school principal or others who are knowledgeable about the applicant’s ability to engage in graduate work in the desired program.
    4. Any additional published criteria established by a program.
    5. Some programs have selective admissions and may admit a limited number of students. Thus, meeting all formal criteria does not guarantee admission.

    Admission Classifications

    1. Regular - meets all of the admission requirements.
    2. Provisional - fails to meet all admission requirements, but has demonstrated promise for graduate study. The candidate is required to immediately complete the GRE (quantitative and verbal portions only) and earn a minimum combined score of 800. If the student fails to achieve these GRE results, a 3.5 GPA in the College Core Requirement (four courses) is required for regular admission. The student must achieve regular admission status based on the above criteria as submitted prior to the completion of 15 hours of course work to continue in the program.
