Requirements for TSOC 3000
Effective Fall 2006, all sections of TSOC 3000 have the following distribution and weighting of assignments toward the final course grade:
Core Assignment
15-25% Critical Skills Demonstration 15-25% Reading analysis/application 15-25% Exams (midterm & final) 15-25% Participation 15-25%
Each instructor is required to use one of the approved textbooks, and to select an additional text to complement her/his approach. See link: [TSOC 3000 Approved Readings]
The specific form and content of each area of assessment is at the discretion of individual instructors with the exception of the Critical Skills Demonstration, which will be consistent across all sections. See links: [Core Assignment] and [Critical Skills Demonstration]
Reading analyses assignments are developed by individual instructors, but in all cases
they require the student to show
understanding of the readings assigned as well as ability to apply them to thinking
about her/his own work and experience. [Reading Analysis/Application]
Exams may take the form of essay, discussion, objective, or some combination of forms, but will be given at midterm and during finals week. Some instructors formulate exams to mirror the types of questions asked on Praxis II in order to give students practice for that professional requirement.
Participation is conceptualized and assessed independently by different instructors. See links: [Participation] The TSOC Working Group has, however, agreed on the following principles about participation:
· Is an “effort” component
· Reflects actual classroom activity
· Points cannot be made up unless absences are excused according to the UT Excused Absence policy (available on the UT website)
