Rebecca Schneider is an associate professor of science education and director of the secondary teacher education program at the University of Toledo. She received her Ph.D. in science education and her Master of Science in ecology and environment from the University of Michigan. As a curriculum designer and teacher educator, Dr. Schneider is exploring innovative approaches to support teachers’ work with students and make classrooms educative experiences for teachers, particularly in urban settings. Recent design and research projects include: teacher materials editor for Project-based Inquiry Science (PBIS,) 15 modules for 6-8 grade published by It’s About Time Publishers; Mentoring a Preservice Teacher and Advanced Mentorship for Teachers, graduate courses practicing teachers focused on classroom based teacher education and teacher leadership; and A Learning Community of Teachers, (ALCOT), an online workspace for teacher collaboration. Her research on teachers’ interactions with online support was selected for the National Technology Leadership Initiative (NTLI) Fellowship to recognize an exemplary paper on technology in science teacher preparation. Her mentoring courses and telementoring components were highlighted by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education as part of a in an innovative STEM teacher preparation program published in Preparing STEM Teachers: The Key to Global Competitiveness. She is a former high school science teacher and has extensive experience working with urban and non-urban in-service teachers. This includes her work in Detroit Public Schools as part of the Learning Technologies in Urban Schools (LeTUS) project and in Toledo Public Schools as part of UT3, a federally funded recruitment and preparation initiative at Toledo. Her work is published in the Journal of Research in Science Teaching, Journal of Science Teacher Education, Journal of Technology in Teacher Education, Computers in Mathematics and Science Education, School Science and Mathematics, and The Proceedings of the International Conference of the Learning Sciences.
