School Health Education

Bachelor of Education in Health Education PreK-12

Students who earn certification in health education will be licensed to teach children in the age ranges of 3 years to 21 years. Certified teachers may work in public and private school systems. Various degree combinations allow the student to specialize in varied areas. A second major, teaching or non-teaching, is required for this degree program.

The certification program in Health Education is based on high expectations; each student who chooses to become a teacher through study in this program needs to make a commitment to excellence in teaching in these areas.

Requirements for Admission to Professional Education for School Health Licensure Programs:
Students will be expected to apply for acceptance into the Health Teacher Preparation Program after the completion of 48 credit hours. Students need to meet the following requirements to be accepted into the upper division program:

1. 2.7 overall GPA
2. Passage of the Praxis I in reading, writing and in mathematics, with a minimum score of 172 on each test.
3. Completion of CIET 2020, HEAL 2000, KINE 2560, KINE 2570 with a grade of C or higher in each course
4. Completion of a portfolio to be presented orally to the school health education faculty.
   
   • Documentation of working with preK-12 students for a minimum of 50 hours. There hours can be obtained through volunteer experience or work experience: e.g. camp counselor, tutor, day care center work, coaching. Documentation must include a letter of time verification from a supervisor and a letter of support/recommendation.
   • Documentation of membership in a professional health education professional organization at the state or national level.
   • Current resume (required in HEAL 2000)
   • Aphilosophy of health education (required in HEAL 2000)
   • Health Education Competency Update (required in HEAL 2000)

 

Master of Education in Health Education

The main purpose of this degree program is to provide additional insight into educational cultural foundations, research foundations, curriculum, educational psychology foundations, and health content and pedagogy. Students in this program should already have an undergraduate degree in school health education or a closely related area.

 

Master of Education in Health Education (School Nurse Licensure Program)

The graduate level School Nurse Licensure program at the University of Toledo is linked with the 40-semester hour Masters of Education in Health Education program. Individuals accepted into this program must have a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) or an equivalent four-year nursing degree.

Individuals applying to the graduate-level School Nurse Licensure program at The University of Toledo must meet the prerequisites of all students accepted into the College of Education. They must have a minimum 2.7 GPA or they are required to submit acceptable GRE scores. They must include three letters of recommendation and include a statement of purpose with their graduate application.

The University of Toledo believes that the masters level school nurse certification program will prepare nurses to be a successful member of a school health team. The courses and experiences will prepare them to meet the challenges that school nurses face today.
