Admission & Application Information for the SLP Graduate Program
ADMISSIONS POLICY AND APPLICATION INFORMATION
The deadline for completed applications for enrollment in the graduate Speech-Language Pathology program is December 15 of every academic year. Applications received after December 15 may not be considered.
Students wishing to apply to the University of Toledo Speech-Language Pathology program should complete an application through the Communication Sciences and Disorders Centralized Application System (www.CSDCAS.org) as well as a Speech and Language Supplemental Application through the University of Toledo College of Graduate Studies. The CSDCAS application includes three recommendations (references), personal essay/statement of purpose, GRE scores, and the official transcripts. None of these items need be directly submitted to the University of Toledo at the time of application. *Students who are admitted into the program, upon official acceptance, will then be required to submit official transcripts before admission.
NOTE: It is the responsibility of the student to monitor his or her application status to insure that all required materials, including the three recommendations (references), are posted by CSDCAS before the deadline date of December 15 to allow appropriate processing time. Failure to do so may result in an incomplete application that is not reviewed. Students may work with the Communication Sciences and Disorders Centralized Application System (www.CSDCAS.org ) to insure that all materials are posted before the deadline, or notify the Speech-Language Pathology Program in the event that materials are lost. Students should also note that The University of Toledo College of Graduate Studies will not consider the supplemental application complete until materials are received by CSDCAS.
When completing the personal essay (statement of purpose), students should include the following:
- Why are you applying to the University of Toledo?
- What influenced you to choose speech-language pathology as a profession?
- What would you like the Admissions Committee to know or consider about you?
- How do you think you will contribute to the University of Toledo program now, and to the profession in the future?
Essays should be one to two pages in length.
The admissions committee will examine the completed applications and make recommendations
regarding the status of the applicants. Upon examination of application materials,
the Admissions committee may contact those applicants who have made the initial pool
to participate in an interview/open house. Applicants, who are not invited to proceed
with the interview/open house, will be denied admission into the speech-language pathology
graduate program and be notified as that determination is made. If a student is denied
admission into the Speech-Language Pathology program, the student may consider other
majors for graduate study, may apply to other universities, or may resubmit an application
for the following fall.
Applicants, who meet the criteria for the interview/open house, will be notified by
invitation in writing; interviews generally occur in February. Following interviews,
students will be placed into tiers based upon the number of positions available; the
first tier will receive a letter of conditional acceptance (pending final approval
of the College of Graduate Studies), and others will be placed on a waiting list.
In the eventuality that positions become available prior to the academic year, the
next ranked candidate will be notified and offered the available position. When it
is clear that no additional seats will become available, the remaining applicant pool
will be informed. The Admissions Committee reserves the right to grant exceptions
to this policy.
Acceptance into our CAA accredited speech-language pathology graduate program is highly
competitive. Consequently, many factors are taken into consideration when selecting
an applicant for acceptance into the program. These factors include but are not limited
to:
1. Undergraduate preparation in the field;
2. cumulative grade point average;
3. Grade point in the major (highest consideration for those whose GPM is >3.5);
4. potential to successfully complete the graduate program;
5. quality of references (require 3);
6. personal essay (statement of purpose);
7. oral and written language skills;
8. interview (by invitation), and
9. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) (Highest consideration will be given to those with a score of >150 on the Verbal section and >149 on the Quantitative section and a GRE writing score > 4.0. A writing score below 3.5 is not acceptable, and students with a GRE writing score of 3.0 or below will not be admitted. Students are encouraged to retake the GRE to improve their scores if they fall below the desired scores; the highest score on any one section will be used in decision making.
