Graduate Student Advising

The Graduate Program Director will be the temporary faculty advisor for all graduate students until a permanent faculty research advisor has been selected. For MSBE coursework students, the Graduate Program Director is the permanent advisor. The Graduate Program Director will assist with registration, completion of the UT Plan of Study, and with other administrative questions that arise.

Advisor Selection

For thesis/dissertation students, advisor selection will occur after the first semester of enrollment. Advisor assignments are based on matching student and faculty research interests. To aid in the advisor selection process, students should meet with Department faculty and other graduate students to discuss potential research projects. Students interested in working on projects outside of the department must have a primary advisor in Bioengineering, but may have a co- or secondary-advisor in another department. Students must submit advisor choices to the Graduate Program Director by the announced submission date to ensure full consideration in advisor selection. Students will be matched with faculty advisors based on the faculty and student preference as well as available funding and space within a faculty member's laboratory. Although students cannot always be matched with their first choice for advisor, every effort will be made to accommodate both student and faculty requests. Students should contact the permanent faculty advisor as soon as advisor assignments are announced.

Changes to Faculty Advisor/Student assignments

Once advisor selections are made and agreed upon, a student may not change advisors without the written consent of the faculty member(s) involved and the approval of the Graduate Program Director. The student must inform the Graduate Program Director in writing that a change of advisor is being considered and schedule an appointment with the Graduate Program Director to discuss the change. In the rare case of an advisor reassignment, in particular for Ph.D. students, the student must change from the area of current research to a completely non-overlapping research area. This same policy applies when a faculty advisor resigns from advising a student.
