Bioengineering

Application Information

Admission to the Bioengineering graduate program is contingent upon the availability of openings for incoming students and is very competitive. Although the numbers vary from year to year, we admit approximately 15% of the students that apply. Admission preference is given to those who apply to the direct Ph.D. program. Consideration of applications for admission and financial aid begins shortly after the January 15 application deadline, and students awarded admission will be notified by the beginning of March. Please be advised that applications are reviewed and considered as they are received, and only completed applications are considered. Applications will continue to be reviewed until all available admission slots are filled. Because of the sequential nature of courses in the graduate curriculum, full-time students are admitted for the fall semester of the academic year; full-time students are rarely accepted for the spring semester.

All application materials indicated below must be sent to: College of Graduate Studies, UH 3240 MS 933, 2801 W. Bancroft Street, The University of Toledo, Toledo, Ohio 43606-3390, U.S.A. Processing of the application will be delayed if it is mailed to the Department instead of the College of Graduate Studies. Application materials may also be submitted to the graduate program electronically by using the online application form at the UT College of Graduate Studies website. Review the Graduate Admission Guidelines for updates before submitting the application.

When applying for the graduate programs in Bioengineering, please use the following codes:

Applicants for admission to Bioengineering must complete the following steps:

  1. Complete the on-line UT Application Form. Indicate in your Statement of Purpose which area of bioengineering is of interest to you and/or with which faculty member(s) you would be interested in working. Information on research areas of the faculty in the Department is available on the Bioengineering web site.
  2. Complete the UT Graduate Assistantship Application Form.
  3. International students applying for a graduate assistantship need not complete the UT Financial Statement Form.
  4. Submit the non-refundable $45 application fee by check or money order made payable to "The University of Toledo".
  5. Submit three (3) letters of recommendation; the UT Recommendation Form may be used. Letters should address your academic potential.
  6. Submit official transcripts from all previous college level work.
  7. Submit scores of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). The GRE General test is required of all students. The University of Toledo testing code is 1845. The exam should be taken so that the results are available in January for fall admission and financial aid consideration. The minimum acceptable total score from the verbal and quantitative sections is 1100. Analytical writing scores will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
  8. International students must submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The minimum acceptable score for the TOEFL is 213 for the computer-based test and 550 for the traditional paper-based test.
