Professor Seo Receives Grant 
September 9, 2016 
Professor Youngwoo Seo (joint appointment with Civil and Environmental Engineering) received funding from the National Science Foundation to support his work on "Engineering Biofilm Dynamics for Cyanotoxins in Biological Water Treatment." This project seeks to understand how biofilm dynamics can be engineered in biological drinking water treatment for cyanobacterial toxin removal. 

Alum Accepts Position at Case Western Reserve University 
September 9, 2016 
Dr. Burcu (Eksioglu) Gurkan, a 2004 MS graduate and Best Master Thesis Award recipient, has accepted a position as an assistant professor in the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department at Case Western Reserve University. While at UT, she worked with Dr. Arun Nadarajah. Subsequently, Dr. Gurkan received a PhD from University of Notre Dame and worked as a postdoctoral researcher at MIT and University of Akron. Her research interests are energy storage and electrochemical separation processes.

Professor Yakov Lapitsky Receives Two Awards 
April 22, 2016 
This semester, Prof. Yakov Lapitsky has received two research awards: 1) College of Engineering Excellence in Research Award and 2) Eleni and Evangelos Theodosiou Sigma Xi Young Investigator Research Award. The awards were given in recognition of his work on creating novel soft materials through non-covalent interaction mediated self-assembly. Professor Carol Stepien presents the Sigma Xi award in the photo. Congratulations Prof. Lapitsky! 

AIChE Student Chapter Places 2nd in ChemE Jeopardy 
April 18, 2016 
Congratulations to the ChemE Jeopardy team consisting of Allan Leoffler (Captain), Christopher Hinckley, Kaleb Eisel, and Natalie Schulte for placing second at the North Central AIChE Student Chapter Conference! They beat Rose-Hulman, Michigan, and Notre Dame along the way. The meeting was held April 15-17, 2016. Toledo will host the meeting in 2019.

Alison Haas, Kylee Kramer, Kayla Piezer, and Lisa Young will travel with Professor Lipscomb to El Salvador to install a water purification unit that they built in their Orientation class for Clean Water for the World. The students kindly ask the UT chemical engineering community for financial support of their trip by donating through gofundme. They are excited about helping a community have better access to potable water with your help! 

Crissy Reno named Alfred & Isabel Bader Scholar 
March 4, 2016 
Congratulations to Cristin (Crissy) Reno for being named an Alfred & Isabel Bader Scholar. A graduate of Sylvania Southview High School and freshman Chemical Engineering student, she worked with Chemistry Professor Jianglong Zhu on a project entitled "Stereoselective Synthesis of S-linked 2-Deoxy Glycosides". 

Professor Varanasi and Colleagues Receive Patent 
February 25, 2016 

Professor Sasidhar Varanasi with colleagues Professor Patty Relue (Bioengineering) and graduate student Bin Li have received a patent for their work to convert aldose isomers of C5 and C6 sugars to the ketose form and to purify them. This work has significant potential to improve processes for conversion of biomass to valued added fuels and materials. Congratulations!

CHEE Welcome Three New Faculty 
September 1, 2015 
 Please help us welcome three new faculty members (from left to right): Ana Alba-Rubio, Matthew Liberatore, and Thihal Ponnaiyan.

Prof. Alba-Rubio joins us from the University of Wisconsin at Madison where she was a Post-doctoral fellow. She possesses a PhD in Heterogeneous Catalysis from the University of Madrid (Spain) and BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Malaga (Spain).

Prof. Liberatore joins from Colorado School of Mines where he was an Associate Professor. He possesses a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Illinois and was a Post-doctoral fellow at the University of Delaware.

Prof. Ponnaiyan worked with Profs. Varanasi and Schall on his doctoral dissertation. He possesses a BTech in Chemical Engineering from Anna University (India), an MBA from Cardiff University (UK) and an MS in Advanced Chemical Engineering from Imperial College (UK). 

Jacob Beakas Receives AIChE Freshman Recognition Award

Congratulations to Jake Beakas for receiving the Freshman Recognition award given in recognition of being the most active freshman in the UT AIChE student chapter. The award includes free registration to the Annual Student Conference, partial reimbursement of travel expenses to the Annual Student Conference, and a Certificate of Recognition as well as recognition on the AIChE web site. 

Zachary Holtzapple Receives AIChE Donald F. Othmer Sophomore Academic Excellence Award

Congratulations to Zach Holtzapple for receiving the Othmer Sophomore Academic Excellence Award given in recognition of attaining the highest scholastic grade-point average during the freshman and sophomore years. Dr. Schall Named Graduate Council Vice Chair

Alessandra Krusciel Named ISA VP 
May 5, 2015 
Alessandra Krusciel was elected Vice President (VP) of the UT International Student Association (ISA) for 2015-16. She joined our department in fall 2014 as part of an exchange program with Pontificia Universidade Catolica do Rio Grande do Sul. Congratulations Alessandra. 

AIChE Helps Students to Walk on Water 
April 27, 2015 
The UT AIChE student chapter assisted with the Non-Newtonian Fluid Walk. The event was sponsored by Marathon Petroleum Company and held in the Engineering courtyard. Students also had the opportunity to talk with Marathon representatives about co-op positions.

Dr. Youngwoo Seo, professor in The University of Toledo Chemical & Environmental Engineering and Civil Engineering Departments, is the recipient of the Eleni and Evangelos Theodosious Sigma Xi Young Investigator Research Award. Congrats, Dr. Seo! 

AIChE Walks Away with Honors at Water Event 
April 20, 2015 
Congratulations to UT's American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) chapter for taking home the trophy yesterday at the UT Walk for Water event! AIChE received the top honor for "Most Water Carried" and "Most Money Raised". Walkers carried jugs filled with water during the 5K to simulate the work women and children in developing countries do every day to obtain water. AIChE members also raised over $2,000 which will assist the group, Clean Water for the World, in their efforts to provide water purification units at no cost to local communities in developing countries. 

Professor Lipscomb University of Bologna Senior Visiting Fellowship Recipient 
April 9, 2015 
Professor Glenn Lipscomb has received a Senior Visiting Fellowship from the Institute of Advanced Studies of the University of Bologna, the oldest university in Europe. The Fellowship will allow him to pursue collaborative research opportunities with University faculty this summer. Congratulations Professor Lipscomb! 

Professor Varanasi Receives University of Toledo Outstanding Faculty Research Award 
April 3, 2015 
Professor Sasidhar Varanasi is a recipient of the 2015 University of Toledo Outstanding Faculty Research Award. The highest award given by the University for research, it recognizes his work on the conversion of biomass to fuels and other products as well as his exemplary record of service and mentorship for students and faculty. Congratulations Professor Varanasi.

A 2010 graduate, Stephanie led numerous service activities for the Department and was recognized for her outstanding student leadership. AIChE Student Chapter ChemE Car Team Places 3rd at Nationals 
November 25, 2014 
The University of Toledo AIChE Student Chapter ChemE Car Team placed third at the national competition held Sunday November 16, 2014 in Atlanta GA as part of the Annual AIChE Meeting. The five-person car team led by Scott Grekowicz was able to stop their car within 9 cm of the target distance of 26 m. AIChE Receives Three Clean Your Streams Awards

AIChE participated in the 18th Annual Clean Your Streams river clean-up event September 20. A group of 15 students pulled many bags of trash from Swan Creek including 8 shopping carts which required wading into the water. Their efforts earned them the First Place Award for Collegiate Awesome Effort, the Second Place Award for Collegiate Battle of the Bags, and the Third Place Award for Collegiate Most Volunteers - quite a haul. Congratulations AIChE! 

Experiments in Space

Dr. Schall's protein crystallization experiments were carried to the ISS aboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule. This photo shows the capsule just prior to docking. 

Professor Schall's Research Launches to the ISS 
September 22, 2014 
Early September 21, protein crystallization experiments from UT took off from the Kennedy Space Center for the International Space Station, culminating a year of preparation. The research is led by Dr. Schall with co-investigators Drs. Ronning, Mueser, and Hanson as well as three graduate students, Steven Dajnowicz, Michael Banco, and Nandu Yanna. The experiments seek to produce neutron diffraction crystals and are supported by a grant from the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS).

Faculty Busy This Past Summer

Professor Kim taught a class in the Petroleum & Petrochemical College of Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. He also spent 10 weeks at the Air Force Institute of Technology in Dayton.

Professor Escobar was in the news as an expert on the water woes in Toledo due to elevated microcystins. A list is available on her web page.

Professor Lipscomb was a visiting professor at the National University of Singapore.

Professor Dong-Shik Kim was invited to teach his Chemical Reaction Engineering course at the Petroleum & Petrochemical College of Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. He will be busy this summer as he also plans to spend time at the Air Force Institute of Technology in Dayton. 

Faculty Teach Workshops at NAMS 2014

Three Professors co-instructed workshops at the 2014 annual meeting of the North American Membrane Society (NAMS). Professor Coleman co-taught Polymeric and Inorganic Membrane Materials and Membrane Formation, Professor Escobar co-taught Membranes for Water Treatment, and Professor Lipscomb co-taught Membranes for Gas Separations.

Professor to Co-Organize International Membrane Meeting 
June 4, 2014 
Professor Glenn Lipscomb and Professor Ranil Wickramasinghe (University of Arkansas) will co-organize the 2017 International Congress on Membranes and Membrane Processes in San Francisco, CA. This triennial meeting is the largest global meeting of membranologists and is held every nine years in North America.

This past summer, Joanne Beckwith was named a Tau Beta Pi Scholar for 2013-14. Joanne is a member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society, Omega Chi Epsilon Chemical Engineering Honor Society, and UT ballroom dance society. AIChE Student Chapter Wins Car Competition

Professor Viamajala Leads Team Awarded $3 MM by DOE

Professors Sridhar Viamajala (Principal Investigator) and Sasidhar Varanasi (Co-Principal Investigator) lead a multi university-government-industry team consisting of Montana State University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the City of Logan in Utah, and AlgEvolve (Montana) that received a $3 MM award from DOE for a project to evaluate the effectiveness of using and recycling the nutrients in waste water, including dairy and municipal wastes, to grow algae (UT News article). Professor Coleman Receives Grant

Professor Kim Leads International Nano-Sensor Collaboration

Under the leadership of Professor Dong-Shik Kim, the University of Toledo, Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), and Kwangwoon University have formed the Nano-STAR (Nano-Sensor Technology Advancement and Research) Center to develop research and education programs on nano-sensors and nano-materials, especially for contaminant detection. Their amazing efforts led to receipt of the First Place award for the Collegiate Battle of the Bags AND the First Place award for Collegiate Awesome Effort. Professor Viamajala Receives Algae Research Award

Professor Sridhar Viamajala and colleagues in collaboration with Ohio University and numerous industrial partners have received a $3 million grant from the Ohio Third Frontier Wright Projects Program to construct The Center for Algal Engineering Research and Commercialization. The Center will house indoor and outdoor ponds for algae growth, enclosed photobioreactors, and pilot-scale downstream processing equipment to study the production of fuels and materials from algae. Sleiman Sleiman Receives Tau Beta Fellowship

Sleiman Sleiman (BSChE Fall 2009) is the recipient of a Tau Beta Pi Fellowship. He joins a select group of Tau Beta Pi members who were selected based on merit and need to receive funding for one year of graduate study. Sleiman plans to start his doctoral studies in Chemical Engineering at The University of Michigan in Fall 2011. Congratulations Sleiman!

Chemical Engineers receive the highest starting salaries and are the second highest paid mid-career (15 years experience) employees according to a recent employee survey conducted by PayScale. According to a recent survey from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, chemical engineering graduates command the second highest salary of all college graduates. Faculty receive Third Frontier Funding for biofuel research

SuGanit Systems and University of Toledo researchers jointly received a grant of $999,900 from the Third Frontier Commission’s Advanced Energy Program of the State of Ohio to support their work on “Scale up of Cellulosic Ethanol Process Based on Novel Biomass Pretreatment and Efficient Co-Fermentation,” Professor Sasidhar Varanasi is the University of Toledo PI. Professors Connie Schall, Patty Relue (BIOE), and Jared Anderson (CHEM) are co-PIs.

Lakhapatri Selected for AIChE Travel Award
