Student Learning Outcomes: Ph.D. Program

The CE Ph.D. program must demonstrate that their students attain these outcomes:

  1. Graduates of our program will be able to demonstrate Ph.D. level proficiency in one of the two specialties outlined in the CE Graduate Handbook. This will be demonstrated by obtaining more than 70% in the qualifying examination and presenting a research proposal to their committee.
  2. Ability to carry out high quality publishable research by the students who are enrolled in the program. All of our Ph.D. graduates are expected to publish in refereed journals. The number of papers published by a graduate will depend on the quality and nature of research (theoretical versus experimental). It is hoped that their work will be cited over the next 20 years by other researchers. This 20-year time frame is chosen because some researchers are working on topics that have long-term impact.
  3. Ability to effectively document, present, and defend results of research. All of our graduate students are expected to present their work in a professional setting, outside the department.
