professional engineer registration

Bachelor of Science in Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology degree students These ABET accredited programs lead to licensure as a Professional Engineer, and satisfy the academic requirements for those credentials set forth by the State of Ohio. Requirements for licensure eligibility as a Professional Engineer vary from state to state. Please check with the appropriate licensing body in the state where you intend to practice to verify that the desired UT program will meet the eligibility criteria for the credentials you seek.  The following national sites contain state board directories.

Registration by the State of Ohio as a Professional Engineer is important for professional practice. To qualify for a Professional Engineering (PE) license students must pass the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE), (formerly known as the Engineer-in-Training [EIT] exam), have four years (8 years for engineering technology) of acceptable progressive experience involving engineering, and pass the Professional Engineering [PE] Exam. Engineering graduate study and registered co-op experiences can often count toward the 4 (or 8) years of required experience. The PE license has reciprocity in many states.

All graduates are strongly encouraged to take the FE in the sitting just prior to their graduation. Effective January, 2014 the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam transitioned to computer-based testing. The FE exam is offered at Pearson Vue Select testing centers located throughout Ohio. The exam is offered in four two-month testing windows with exams available in January-February, April-May, July-August and October-November. Candidates are permitted to take the FE exam one time during each testing window, limited to three times in a 12-month period. Registration is always open.
