Leadership Transition

Timing

It is wise for current leaders to start working with potential leaders during the semester prior to elections/selections so they are well prepared to take the leadership role. Organizations are also encouraged to conduct elections no later than mid-spring each year so that the officers-elect have a few weeks to work with the current officers before an exchange of leadership is made.

Tips for Success

  • The entire leadership team should prepare the Annual Report toward the end of the school year, and the leaders-elect should at least read it before taking over.
  • Hold leadership retreats or planning sessions during the late spring, during summer, or right before school starts. Outgoing leaders can provide training to new leaders. Not sure where to start?  Here are some questions to think about, and check out these resources for outgoing and incoming officers.
  • Hold a transition ceremony after the election/selection and make sure that new leaders fully understand their roles and are excited about getting started.
  • Mentoring from your Advisor(s) is always encouraged, but is even more helpful during times of transition. Advisors can provide a strong sense of continuity.
