                  professional ATHLETIC TRAINING PROGRAM

The University of Toledo Athletic Training Program has begun to transition to a Graduate-level Professional Program.  The final class of undergraduate students has been admitted. The AT Faculty are currently developing the new Graduate-level program and anticipate enrolling students starting in July 2018.  Please contact the Program Director with any questions or if you would like additional details about the transition.

Athletic trainers are healthcare professionals who, in collaboration with physicians and other healthcare professionals, provide preventative as well as immediate and acute care, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries and illness in a physically active population.  Given the increasing number of individuals participating in sports and recreational activities, the role of an athletic trainer is an important one as these healthcare professionals are specifically trained to prevent, identify and treat impairments and functional limitations in the physically active population. Athletic trainers work alongside other healthcare professionals and in a variety of settings including universities, high schools, professional sports, outpatient sports medicine clinics and industrial settings.  In 2010, U.S. News & World Report named athletic training as one of the 50 best careers.

This Professional Athletic Training Program is accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Upon successful completion of the program graduates are eligible to sit for the national certification exam offered by the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer. Once the graduate successfully passes this exam, he or she is then eligible to apply for state licensure to practice as an athletic trainer.  Requirements for licensure eligibility vary from state to state. Please check with the appropriate licensing body in the state where you intend to practice to verify that the desired UT program will meet the eligibility criteria for the credentials you seek.  The following national sites contain state board directories.

For more than 40 years, the University of Toledo has had an accredited undergraduate program, offering students the opportunity to gain the knowledge, skills and abilities required of athletic trainers.  Through classroom, laboratory and clinically-based education experiences, students are introduced to the core concepts of sports medicine.

Over the past 3 years, graduates of UT’s ATP have posted an impressive 95% first time pass rate on the BOC exam, and a total pass rate of 100%.  An overwhelming number of students have gone on to pursue graduate degrees in athletic training or have been accepted into another professional healthcare programs.

Mission Statement And Goals
The mission of the CAATE-accredited professional Athletic Training Program at The University of Toledo is to provide students with the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to become a competent entry-level athletic trainer while also instilling the mindset of a scholarly clinician. The athletic training program promotes cultural pluralism, racial diversity, gender representation and respect for divergent views in its quest to improve the education of athletic trainers at all levels.

Goals

Goal #1: To prepare students for entry-level practice in the field of athletic training

  • Objective 1: Provide students with the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully challenge the Board of Certification Examination
  • Objective 2: Provide students with the knowledge, skills and abilities to demonstrate competency in each of the five practice domains as defined by the 6th Role Delineation Study/Practice Analysis (Board of Certification 2012)

  • Objective 3: Provide students with the opportunity to translate knowledge from theoretical to hands-on through a series of progressive courses and clinical education rotations

Goal #2: To instill in students the mindset of a scholarly clinician

  • Objective 1: Provide students with information, techniques and methods best aligned with the evidence-based practice model
  • Objective 2: Provide students with the knowledge, skills and abilities to evaluate, consume and apply research evidence
  • Objective 3: Provide students with the opportunity to translate research evidence to clinical practice through a series of progressive courses and clinical education rotations

Goal #3: To provide students with the skills necessary to operate successfully as a member of a healthcare team

  • Objective 1: Provide students with the knowledge, skills and abilities to communicate in an effective and professional manner
  • Objective 2: Provide students with hands-on opportunity to observe and engage as a member of a sports medicine healthcare team in a variety of settings
  • Objective 3: Provide students with opportunities for inter-professional education with other healthcare profession programs
