Welcome to the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program at The University of Toledo. We are proud to introduce you to our long-standing tradition of excellence in Physical Therapy Education.

The Ohio Physical Therapy Association (OPTA) named UToledo’s Student Physical Therapy Organization (SPTO) winner for 2022-2023 Program of the Year Challenge.  In 2020, SPTO also won program of the year, please read UToledo News Story for accomplishments.

  • On March 3, 1983 the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) granted Accreditation to the Physical Therapy Program at the Medical University of Ohio.  In 2002, the entry-level master’s program was granted Accreditation.  In 2014, The UToledo Physical Therapy Program received a full Accreditation status.  The accreditation cycle extends through June 2025.

DOCTOR OF PHYSICAL THERAPY (DPT) PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS 

  • This Doctor of Physical Therapy accredited program leads to licensure as a physical therapist, and satisfies the academic requirements for those credentials set forth by the State of Ohio. Requirements for licensure eligibility vary from state to state.  Please reference the Professional Licensure Information page for state details. For students who wish to practice in a state other than Ohio, please email the program director/advisor, Dr. Bouillon or call 419.530.6671 to discuss requirements in that state. 

  • Doctor of Physical Therapy Financial Fact Sheet - 2023-24

  • The 8 semester, 95 credit hour DPT Program is located on the Main Campus of The University of Toledo. The program utilizes comprehensive facilities located on the Main and the Health Science campuses that are located in close proximity to each other.

  • The UToledo Health Science Campus provides students with the benefit of the sophisticated physical and intellectual resources of an academic health science center, such as an acute care hospital, a CARF accredited in-patient rehabilitation center, a comprehensive out-patient rehabilitation center, advanced simulation technologies, and clinicians and scientists who are engaged in health-related research and advanced patient care.

  • The University of Toledo’s Lloyd A. Jacobs Interprofessional Immersive Simulation Center and the Hillebrand Clinical Skills Center provide students the opportunity to develop their clinical, communication and interprofessional skills in a realistic environment  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbTHXWEYILw. They participate in learning experiences with students of other health care disciplines, including occupational therapy, speech language pathology, athletic training, nursing, physician assistant, medicine, and pharmacy. Thus, students learn the skills of physical therapy practice, as well as the culture and professionalism of health care.

  • After earning their DPT degree, students may also pursue educational opportunities such as  the Accredited Neurologic Physical Therapy Residency offered through the University of Toledo Medical Campus!

FEEDBACK AND COMPLAINTS

The University of Toledo Doctor of Physical Therapy Program welcomes your feedback or concern regarding any issues involving with the curriculum, students, faculty, graduates, and any other parties associated with the program. 

COMPLAINTS-DUE PROCESS

Students who have a complaint should follow the Doctor of Physical Therapy Student Handbook.

COMPLAINTS-OUTSIDE DUE PROCESS

A situation may generate a complaint that is not addressed by existing procedures described in the Student Physical Therapy Handbook, Graduate Student Handbook, or the Clinical Education Manual.  An individual, group or organization that falls outside the realm of university due process, may file a complaint about the Doctor of Physical Therapy program regarding program policies and procedures, activities, or individual or groups of students, faculty, and staff. 

Procedure for Handling Complaints Outside the Realm of Due process

  1. The complaint should describe the specific nature of the complaint, name of complainant, name of the complainee, date and location of incident, and detailed description of the incident. The complaint should be written and signed by the individual lodging the complaint.  A complaint can be submitted to the Physical Therapy Program Director, Dr. Lucinda Bouillon by email Lucinda.bouillon@utoledo.edu or regular mail.

  1. The Director will discuss the complaint directly with the party involved within fourteen (14) business days. If the discussion with the complainant successfully resolves the matter, the Program Director will acknowledge the resolution of the complaint with a letter sent to the complainant.
  2. If the complaint is not resolved at the Program level, or if the complaint is against the Program Director, the complaint will be addressed directly with the parties involved within fourteen (14) business days by the Department Chair, Dr. Eric Longsdorf, either by email eric.longsdorf@utoledo.edu or regular mail.

  1. If this resolves the matter, the Department Chair will acknowledge resolution of the complaint via a letter sent to the complainant and Program Director.
  2. If the issue is not resolved to the satisfaction of the complainant after review by the Department Chair, then the written complaint may be filed with the Associate Dean of the College of Health & Human Services, or regular mail.

  2. If the complaint is not resolved at the program, department, or college level, the written complaint will be filed with the Vice Provost for Graduate Affairs

  1. The Vice Provost will discuss the complaint directly with the parties involved within fourteen (14) days and acknowledge resolution of the complaint with a letter sent to the complainant, Associate Dean, Department Chair, and Program Director.

 

  1. If the complainant has exhausted the process and is not satisfied within the program and University, the complainant has the right to contact the American Physical Therapy Association Accreditation Department, Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), at 703-706-3245 or accreditation@apta.org
  2. Records of complaints and responses about the program, including the nature of the complaint and the final letter of disposition of the complaint are maintained by the Program Director for a period of five (5) years. All matters will be held strictly confidential and without fear of retribution.
