    Licensure
Since June, 1990, athletic training is a licensed profession in the State of Ohio. To obtain a license to practice in Ohio you must take the BOC Certification Examination (Ohio has purchased the results as the core content examination) and take an exam that covers the rules governing the practice of athletic training in Ohio (open book exam). Athletic training students are covered by the license of their supervising athletic trainer, however, you would be subject to licensure provisions if you attempt to work in an outside setting while still going to school. Upon graduation and passing the certification examination, a student MUST become licensed in Ohio. This must be completed before the student can work as an athletic trainer in any setting including as a graduate assistant or an instructor. Further information is available online from the Athletic Trainers Section of the Ohio Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Athletic Trainers Board, at http://otptat.ohio.gov/ or at 77 South High Street , 16th Floor, Columbus, OH 43266-0317, (phone 614-466-3774, fax 614-995-0816). You also should be aware that state practice acts may actually supercede the domains of athletic training identified by the BOC. In addition, other states have educational requirements that may be in excess of the minimum UT degree requirements which you must complete to be licensed or registered in that state. It is the individual student's responsibility to complete the requirements for the state in which the student desires to work.
