Retention in the CAATE-accredite Athletic Training Education Program

To remain in the athletic training education program you must complete the following steps:

    • Maintain a 2.500 Grade Point Average overall for courses taken at the University of Toledo.
    • Maintain a 2.500 Grade Point Average in core courses at ALL TIMES.
    • Failure to do so will result in activation of the retention procedures principles below.

    In addition:

    Second Year

At the end of your second year you must have:

    • Completed KINE 2710 and 2720, Clinical Skill Development I and II with a minimum grade of B- in each.
    • Completed KINE 2610 (Lower Extremity Evaluation), KINE 2620 (Upper Extremity Evaluation) with a minimum grade of C+ in each course.

    Third Year

At the end of your third year you must have:

    • Completed KINE 3710 and 3720, Clinical Skill Development III and IV with a minimum grade of B- in each.
    • Completed, KINE 3610 (Medical Conditions), 3630 (Therapeutic Modalities), KINE 3660 (Rehabilitation of Athletic Injuries) with a minimum grade of C+ in each course

    Fourth Year

At the end of your fourth year you must have:

    • Completed KINE 4710 and 4720, Clinical Skill Development V and VI with a minimum grade of B- in each.
    • Completed KINE 4650 (Administration of Athletic Training Programs) with a minimum grade of C+.
    • Failure to complete these requirements will subject the student to the denial of the curriculum director's signature on the student's application for the BOC Certification Examination until the difficulty has been removed.

Retention procedures include the following principles:

    1. Should a student's OVERALL GPA or their CORE GPA fall below 2.500, they are on probation in the athletic training education program.
    2. Should a student return to a 2.500 GPA for the semester on probation, they would be reinstated to full rights and privileges. If the semester GPA or semester core GPA is at 2.500 or above, but the overall GPA or core GPA is still below 2.500, they will be continued on probation.
    3. Should the student on probation not obtain a 2.500 GPA for the semester they are on probation, they are suspended from athletic training clinical experience until the OVERALL GPA or CORE GPA is at 2.500. Due to the sequencing of Clinical Skills Development and the class requirement of clinical practice, students may not take ANY athletic training courses while on suspension. Attaining a semester GPA of 2.500 is no longer sufficient to be reinstated for clinical experiences.
    4. Should the student who is suspended from clinical experiences fail to obtain a 2.500 GPA for the semester, they will be dismissed from the athletic training education program and referred to the College of Health Science and Human Service Office of Student Services for advising in another major area of study.
    5. Appeal of any of these sanctions is to the Program Director. Any further appeal should be made through the normal university grievance procedures.
